The very notion that so-called disrespect to some third party outside of a school is an offense worthy of a two-day schools suspension reminds us all that for so many schools, the goal of instruction is erasure of the individual, suppression of the instinct to use knowledge for advocacy against systems of power. Ridiculous school decision. Embarrassing to any true educator.

Although "DeVos is wrong" is kind of a given, the article is interesting.

And yet, there's never a recognition of the way "reform" of the DC Public Schools was also, undeniably, a racial project. The Theory of Action, clearly, suggested that essential to the pursuit of success via data manipulation was the reduction, and in some cases, erasure, of black teachers and black administrators from the system.
Data did the talking. Education got lost in the noise.
Data suggested that the District was a national model. Sometimes, data can mislead.

What the editorial failed to notice is the manner in which The Gates Foundation, like no other variable in public education, has problematically and disastrously pushed for a capitalistic business paradigm in the management and supervision of schools. When schools superintendents became CEOs and chancellors, the thorough destruction of the nation's public schools shifted from concept to implementation.
