Did you know there is a “Hair Color Code”?
When my Mentor taught me to formulate using "Hair Color Code",
it changed my life as a colorist. It enabled me to formulate with confidence and not formulate from fear.
One of the things he always told me is that most hairdressers don't have a system to predict their results.
That is why guesswork, or trial & error is the pathway chosen most often.
Example: Many Salon Professionals think of the color Copper as orange!
In code it is R+R+Y That's why we created the "Formulating Guide" (Available at Guru Nation), to help train the mind how to follow a logical sequence when formulating a color.
Hair Color Code comes from the Color Wheel. It is the process of breaking your color formula and the contribution from the hair into all of the basic components (B’s, R’s, and Y’s) available. Then rebuilding them to create Background, Tone, and Reflect.
It helps reveal wither or not we have a balance or imbalance in our formula result before we apply the formula to our client’s hair. Too much Background = flat, drab, subdued, desaturated results. Too much Tone or Reflect = bright, vibrant, hollow results
We invite you to join us on this life changing journey that may change the way you formulate your hair color forever!

Can you please Assist in Combating "Mixaholicisim" in the Hair Color Industry!
Mixaholicisim: the compulsive urge to blend multiple shades of hair color until the intended tones or reflections are no longer discernible in the final outcome.
Did you know?
Salon Professionals are increasingly grappling with the temptation to mix various colors within the same bowl during formulation at the color bar or in the back room, a phenomenon I've dubbed "mixaholicism." This goes beyond blending two distinct colors; we're talking about incorporating 3, 4, or even 5 shades together in a single mix.
That nagging little voice in our heads whispers, "What if it's too warm? What if it's not warm enough?" and before we know it, we've overloaded the mixture with an array of hues, resulting in a muddy, overly complex color that lacks the desired tone or reflection.
It's no surprise that we feel a rollercoaster of emotions as our colors process.
To combat "mixaholicism" and achieve the desired hair color results, it's crucial to understand the fundamentals of hair color. Each hair color shade consists of background, tone (primary tone), and reflect (secondary tone). Background is typically the most dominant of the three elements. Therefore, every additional shade added to the mix increases the background and diminishes the desired tone or reflect.
Consider background as the depth within your chosen shade. This understanding is vital for successful color formulations. Two key concepts to grasp before mixing colors are absorption and reflection:
1. Absorption: The amount of light that the final color absorbs determines its depth. Background primarily absorbs light.
2. Reflection: The amount of light that the final color reflects influences its brightness and may affect how light or bright the color appears. Primary tone and secondary tone contribute to visual brightness and lightness perception.
By using a single shade or a maximum of two shades in a concentrated formula, we can optimize our chances of achieving the desired hair color results effectively. This approach helps to maintain control over the balance of background, tone, and reflect in the color formulation.
If you're interested in delving deeper into the principles of hair color and enhancing your understanding further, consider joining one of our educational programs.
By participating in these programs, you can stay informed with accurate information and scientific support, ensuring that you are well-equipped with knowledge and skills for successful hair coloring endeavors.

Common Misconceptions and Misinformation in the Hair Color Industry
In the world of hair color education, misinformation often circles back, clouding the understanding of budding salon professionals embarking on their learning journey.
Today, I debunk prevalent myths perpetuated by self-proclaimed hair color experts, shedding light on the science behind hair color and dispelling misinformation that may hinder professional growth.
While our time and space here are limited, I'll address essential misconceptions that warrant clarification. Explore our comprehensive educational resources, insightful podcasts, and don't miss our live sessions every Wednesday at 6pm PST on Instagram.
Join the conversation and share your thoughts on these debunked myths or suggest topics for future dissections in the comments below.
Enjoy delving deeper into the truth behind hair color science!
STATEMENT:
- Lowering developer with lightener gives you greater lift.
- This belief is widespread, but lowering developer strength with lightener doesn't increase lift. It slows down the process by decreasing available oxygen, allowing for longer processing time without the risk of over-processing.
STATEMENT:
- Raising developer strength with color can increase vibrancy.
- Increasing developer strength when working with color might be thought to enhance vibrancy, but in truth, it primarily impacts the level of the shade and its reflectivity. While it can result in a lighter or brighter outcome, it doesn't necessarily intensify the hue's vibrancy due to the chemical reactions involved.
STATEMENT
A higher choice of developer will increase tonal deposit.
Increasing the strength of the developer actually accelerates the oxidation process, which can lead to faster color development. However, this can also cause more degradation of the dye molecules, resulting in less tonal deposit. So, contrary to the statement, a higher choice of developer may not necessarily increase tonal deposit.
STATEMENT
A lower choice of developer will increase depth deposit.
Using lower strength developers like 5 or 10 volume is often associated with achieving more depth in color. This is because lower strength developers disrupt less of the hair's melanin, allowing for a deeper color result. It's not necessarily that a lower choice of developer directly increases depth deposit, but rather it works in a way that preserves the natural depth of the hair for a richer overall result. Understanding these nuances in developer choice is key to achieving the desired color outcomes.
By understanding the role of developer in color chemistry, professionals can make informed choices that lead to accurate and desired results.

Hello Everyone : We have a new podcast dropping on our Premium channel tomorrow morning , May 4th , at 9am EST. It's all about that hot water / cold water discussion our industry has been having for the past few years. We think you will find it very informative. Short overview below :
Hot Water vs. Cold Water:
Debunking the Myth About how it affects the cuticle layers of the hair.
The debate over whether cold water really closes the cuticle of the hair has lingered for years.
Just when it seems like a consensus has been reached, a new wave of "social media posts" resurfaces, reigniting the controversy. Let's delve into this issue and finally dispel any myths.
My mentor always emphasized that the world of hair color can be understood as "The Science of Precise Estimation."
While this definition may sound unconventional at first, it underscores the importance of grasping various aspects to comprehend the hair color process fully.
This includes delving into subjects like Hair Science, Hair Color Science, basic scientific principles, such as those taught in Eighth Grade Science, Physics, Hair Color Theory, Formulating hair color, Hair Color Application Techniques, and beyond.
It's true that many in the industry operate without a full scientific understanding, leading to claims and practices based on observation and opinion rather than solid scientific evidence.
When it comes to the impact of heat on hair, it's important to remember that hair is a fibrous appendage of the body and not technically considered living tissue.
Therefore, heat primarily affects the pores of the scalp rather than the hair itself.
There are various factors at play when rinsing hair with warm water, and in this discussion, we will delve into each one to shed light on why there is often confusion surrounding this topic.
By gaining a deeper understanding of these dynamics, we can move beyond opinions and make more informed decisions in our haircare practices.
So, let's explore this topic further and unravel the complexities involved. By the end of this discussion, you will have a clearer perspective on the role of heat and water temperature in hair care.
Enjoy the program!

"Have you ever witnessed someone crafting a hair color formulation? It can be quite a fascinating sight.
There are those who strictly follow set "recipes," while others rely on someone else's expertise to blend a color for them.
Some even throw caution to the wind, mixing a variety of shades haphazardly out of fear rather than confidence.
And then there are those who fly by the seat of their pants, lacking any organized system or method.
The truth is, many hairstylists were never taught a structured approach to formulating colors.
That's where techniques like "Color Mapping" and "Pigment Weight" come in, part of the Guru Nation system designed to revolutionize the way we approach color formulation.
In this episode, we will delve into these innovative techniques, unveiling secrets and skills that can elevate your hair coloring game to new heights.

This is Hair Color Speaking to You!
Are you finding it challenging to comprehend what you're seeing?
Have you ever come across "dye outs" before?
These are much more than just a simple application of color with a tint brush.
They convey an entire narrative.
They reveal the true colors that constitute a shade, beyond its name, a litho chart (photographic simulation), or a plastic swatch created to mimic the intended shade.
It's admirable that , following our lead , many manufacturers, educators, and influencers are incorporating this exercise into educational platforms worldwide. However, a common issue arises where they often provide limited guidance, focusing solely on observing the color rather than teaching the essential skill of interpreting it accurately. Understanding how to read the color is crucial and distinguishes a comprehensive learning experience.
I can sense you may have questions such as:
- How do I effectively read the color?
- When is the optimal time to read the color?
- Why is a white background preferred for this exercise?
- Should I be utilizing hair swatches instead?
- What specific aspects should I be observing when reading the color?
It's understandable that without clear answers to these questions, individuals may walk away feeling uncertain and ultimately opt out of incorporating this exercise into their learning journey.
That is why we created two programs for this subject . 1) Check Your Background” & 2) , the “Swatch It” program.
This program will introduce an exercise that empowers you to understand and excel in mastering your hair color brand, whether you have a swatch book or litho chart at hand or not.
Through this exercise, you'll learn to identify the background, tone, and reflection within a color.
If this opportunity piques your interest or if you're looking to enhance your hair coloring expertise, we warmly invite you to participate in one of our interactive online events.
During these sessions, we will guide you through a hands-on experience utilizing your personalized "learners kit" to practice, interpret, and comprehend dye outs.
So , it’s time to level up !
Enhancing your understanding of hair color can be a game-changer for your career. Join us in our upcoming virtual classroom session, where we'll provide valuable insights that could transform your approach to hair color and elevate your skills to the next level. Did you know that the way we were taught the color wheel may not directly apply to the world of hair coloring?
For instance, when a tube of color claims to be "Gold," we anticipate seeing just that - gold.
However, in reality, it often presents more than just a single shade.
But why does this occur?
It all comes down to how hair colors are composed: Background, Tone, and Reflect.
Once we grasp these fundamental properties, we gain a sort of "superpower" in formulating colors at the Salon.
It's imperative to understand that this comprehension may not come easily.
It requires unlearning old methods before we can relearn and expand our knowledge base, especially when seeking to enhance our existing skills in hair coloring.
However, with determination and focus on achieving mastery, we can overcome any obstacles that may come our way.
In this episode, we delve into the importance of Background, Tone, and Reflection in hair color, discussing how "desaturation" impacts hair. Join us as we explore these vital elements crucial to achieving hair color success and elevating your skills to new heights. So, hit play... and in just 26 minutes, you'll gain a wealth of knowledge to guide you on the journey to mastery! We hope you enjoy the program!

5 Factors that influence hair color , episode #2
The engaging topic of gravity often unites us all, while a lesser-known battleground resides in the realm of color theory among salon professionals.
Have you ever witnessed heated debates stemming from interpretations of the Color Wheel? It's a common occurrence that hints at a deeper issue: many of us may "know" the color wheel by rote, but do we truly understand its principles?
To clarify, "knowing" the color wheel entails surface-level familiarity, while "understanding" involves a profound grasp of its intricacies and applications. In this episode, we'll embark on a journey to facilitate a paradigm shift, encouraging a deeper comprehension and practical utilization of the color wheel in your artistic endeavors.

Hello Everyone : Our newest Podcast on our Premium Channel dropped this morning. You are invited to subscribe and become part of our growing family of Salon Professionals. It may change the way you think about hair color forever. A short description of this Episode below :
“Desaturation and it’s impact on the hair color process”
f If you've ever attended one of our classes at Guru Nation, you've likely heard us discuss concepts like Dilution, Desaturation, Background, Tone, and Reflect.
While these terms may seem complex if you're unfamiliar with them, they are crucial for understanding the hair color formulation process.
In this segment, we will delve into "desaturation" and its significance in hair color application.
Saturation or Chroma (the scientific term) refers to the purity of a tone without any added colors like brown or grey. It represents the intensity or strength of a color.
When we introduce an additional color (background) to a pure tone, we alter its purity or saturation, resulting in desaturation.
Mixing multiple shades in our color bowl can also lead to a certain level of desaturation in all the shades present.
Join us on this educational journey to explore desaturation, its impact on a formula, and how to approach hair color formulation with precision and purpose.

Purple or Violet ?
In the realm of hair coloring, the topic of purple versus violet often leads to confusion and misinformation perpetuated by influencers and educators. Today, I aim to provide clarity on this subject.
It is not uncommon to hear misconceptions regarding the color wheel, with some claiming that mixing blue and red yields purple. This oversimplified explanation overlooks the fundamental principles of color theory. Additionally, the notion that violet is merely a dilution of purple further muddles the understanding of these distinct hues.
To grasp the nuances between purple and violet, we must delve into the origins of colors within the visible spectrum. Each color is associated with its own electromagnetic wave, contributing to its unique properties. Colors like purple and magenta, lacking a designated light wave, are considered engineered rather than naturally occurring.
Understanding the disparity between purple and violet is essential in the realm of hair coloring and the broader context of color theory. Clarifying these distinctions can enhance our appreciation of hues and their interplay in creative expression.
"While this issue may appear trivial to some, it holds significant importance for those striving to acquire accurate knowledge. Learning hair color theory can be particularly challenging due to the multitude of overlapping terms that may not directly relate to the actual process, thus posing obstacles for those seeking mastery in this field.
It is crucial that the responsibility for clarifying such concepts lies with the educator, not the learner.
I hope this post provokes some contemplation and assists everyone in our profession on their journey to success."

A Vision, A Belief, A Dream, A Commitment
Since the 1980s, Dennis Gerhart has harbored a vision for an honest, factual, and science-based educational platform aimed at Salon Professionals.
This vision stemmed from his experience training professionals in the industry.
However, it was only during his tenure with a major hair care company from 2010 to 2014 that the seeds for such a company began to germinate.
After years of battling misinformation, promoting scientific integrity over marketing gimmicks, and advocating for education that empowers Salon Professionals rather than just drives product sales, Dennis felt compelled to take action. He recognized the need for a platform that prioritized unbiased education, leading to the inception of Guru Village in May 2015.
Guru Village was founded by Dennis and a close-knit group of like-minded individuals who shared a belief in the importance of a "brand-neutral" educational company.
Their shared commitment to empowering Salon Professionals marked the inception of this innovative venture.
At the outset, we faced an uphill battle convincing Distributors to see our vision.
As a result, we decided to engage directly with Salon Professionals through various social media platforms and partner salons that recognized the top-notch education Guru Village provided.
As we progressed, some industry educators gravitated towards our vision and expressed interest in joining our team, thereby further enriching our talent pool.
Subsequently, independent manufacturers took notice of our work and approached us for potential collaborations, forming a valuable alliance to support our endeavors.
These aligned companies continue to endorse our initiatives by providing products for our hands-on workshops and offering special gifts (SWAG) to all attendees at Guru Village events.
It is quite remarkable that by our fourth year, we successfully galvanized a global following of Salon Professionals, extending beyond North America.
By fostering relationships with industry insiders, educators, and manufacturers, Guru Village's impact has expanded significantly, solidifying its presence as a respected entity in the beauty education landscape.
It's remarkable to reflect on how we now conduct educational training programs for Salon Professionals in over 12 countries worldwide, with a dedicated team of 7 exceptional facilitators and educators covering all aspects of our profession.
This growth has transformed our small village into a thriving global community.
Hence, in 2019, we rebranded ourselves as "Guru Nation" to encapsulate this expanded vision, while maintaining our original heart and authenticity.
At Guru Nation, we adhere to 10 core principles that underpin our operations and interactions.
These guiding tenets can be explored on our website (www.gurunation.net). What truly sets us apart is the assurance that each member of our team upholds these principles in their approach to both business and building relationships.
"We are incredibly proud of our collective accomplishments and deeply grateful for the Salon Professionals who support us on social media, participate in our educational events, achieve success using our methods and systems, recommend our company to others, embrace our message, and rely on us as a trusted educational partner.
We feel truly blessed!"
