Fretography Mark Newstetter is a guitarist, singer, songwriter and educator located in San Francisco.

author of the Fretography® guitar method books and YouTube video creator. Fretography® is a mapping method of connecting standard diatonic theory concepts to the guitar fretboard, created and developed by composer, guitarist, and educator Mark Newstetter. Geometries are linked to musical ideas through symmetries inherent to key structure. Inspired by the simple expression of diatonic symmetry as seen on the piano keyboard, we recognize that such symmetries are present within the grid of the guitars frets and strings in standard tuning. Since there is no conventional recognition of these relationships, there has been no established terminology for the geometric expression of tonal concepts on the fretboard. Fretography® assigns names to landmark shapes on the grid when no standard term exists.
