Homesteading is about observing the seasons, working with nature, learning practical skills, and making the most of what we have—right where we are. Or, down the road and around the corner.

So this week, I encourage you to look around with fresh eyes. What resources, opportunities, or possibilities might you be overlooking? How can you become more of a producer—and a more active participant in providing for yourself and your family—within the space and circumstances you occupy today?

You don’t have to wait for more land, more time, more money, or the “perfect” homestead to begin. Sometimes, the first step is simply noticing what’s already there and choosing to make something of it.

Most Americans are not free. We are merely comfortable enough that we have stopped noticing our dependence. If someone else controls your food, medicine, money, education, information, and even what you are permitted to say publicly, how free are you?

We argue over whether the left or the right should control the system, while almost nobody asks why the system has so much control over our families in the first place. We call it normal to work our lives away buying food we cannot identify, produced by corporations we do not trust, while thousands of acres of usable ground sit covered in lawns.

We call it progress when children can operate every electronic device in the house but cannot grow a tomato, identify a useful plant, cook without a microwave, preserve food, or care for an animal. We call ourselves prepared because the grocery store is open today. We call ourselves informed because we repeat whichever news channel agrees with us. We call ourselves believers because we attend a building, yet many people never open Scripture and test what they are being taught.

That is not freedom. That is managed dependence.

Before someone turns this into a Republican-versus-Democrat argument, both sides helped build this system. Both sides spend your money, protect powerful interests, and promise freedom while expanding control whenever they possess the power to do it.

The government is not coming to teach your children how to grow food. Corporations are not coming to make your family independent of their products. The pharmaceutical industry does not profit when people learn basic nutrition, prevention, and responsible self-care—although there are absolutely times when skilled medical treatment saves lives. The food industry does not profit when families grow, forage, preserve, trade, and purchase directly from local farmers. The entertainment industry does not profit when families turn off their screens, open their Bibles, work together, and rebuild their communities.

Nobody is coming to make us free. Freedom must be practiced.

Grow something, even if it is only one herb in a pot. Learn to identify the useful plants already growing around you. Meet a farmer. Preserve food. Learn a trade. Teach your children practical skills. Get out of unnecessary debt. Read the ingredients. Question every political party. Test every preacher. Open Scripture for yourself. Know your neighbors. Build something that cannot be taken away with the flip of a switch.

This is not about living in fear. It is about refusing to live helpless. A population that can feed itself, think for itself, care for its neighbors, and obey God before men is extremely difficult to control.

Maybe that is why self-sufficient people are treated like extremists while complete dependence is presented as normal.

Here is the question, and I genuinely want everyone to answer it: What is one thing society calls “normal” that you now believe is keeping people dependent?
