When I was a kid, we sang, "In 14-hundred and 92..." - you likely know the rest, and we were taught that Columbus was to be honored for "discovering" America. While the google calendar is still showing today as , what I've learned about the man and the treatment of indigenous Americans - including here in Carlisle - leads me to choose honoring Indigenous People on this day. If you agree and want to learn more, the resources are plentiful, and hopefully school lessons have been adjusted to address the brutality of explorers, the victimization of indigenous people, and to celebrate the beauty of the culture that was here long before Columbus and friends "sailed the ocean blue."

If you're interested in resources, let me know. I'll share some that I've read and watched. A good place to start is Barcaro's documentary, "The Lost Children of Carlisle," specifically about the Carlisle Indian School and returning the children to their tribes. I was fortunate to attend the premiere at @. Whether you already know a little or a lot, the documentary is really well-done and is a passion project of Barcaro's.
