Handgun 102 brought the 🔥🔥! Great job everyone - We enjoyed having you in the class. Good to hone those skills and develop new ones. Attackers, thugs, thieves and other criminally-minded folk prey on the weak. Does this mean you should not go out?

No.

But it does mean you need to be prepared.

Here are five things you can do today that will help make you less likely to become a victim:

1. Keep your head up. Stay off your phone. Keep your eyes up. Most attackers will leave you alone if they know you’ve seen them, and you are alert.

2. Know your exits are before you need them. Whether it's a playground, a parking lot, or a grocery store. Take a few seconds to identify where you can get out quickly.

3. Position yourself with a purpose. It sounds corny but, sit or stand with your back to a wall or fence where possible. Never let strangers approach you from behind, especially when your attention may be split between them and your kids.

4. Trust the ‘feeling’ before you can explain it. If something feels off, it probably is. Don't talk yourself out of it to avoid seeming rude. It’s easy to apologize. Move. Create distance. Act on instinct first and rationalize later.

5. Have a force option accessible at all times. Any ‘tool’ buried at the bottom of a bag or pocket is something you can't use. OC/Pepper Spray, tactical pens, small flashlights Kubotan/MUNIO are all good choices, but they must be immediately accessible or in your hand. Keep them clipped to your pocket or somewhere you can access them in under a second — because in a real situation, a second is all you may get.
