Dr. Laura McDonald is a Postdoctoral Investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, also known as WHOI. She studies how ocean conditions, like temperature and oxygen, affect where marine animals, including sharks, live and travel.

We are thankful to have scientists like Laura to discover the affects of changing oceans on our shark species.

Happy Earth Day from Gills Club! 🌎💙
Today we celebrate the ocean that connects us all and the incredible girls who are learning to protect it.

Earth Day is a great reminder that small actions make a big impact. This week, commit to one ocean-friendly habit (like reducing plastic use or participating in a beach cleanup!) and feel free to share it in the comments 🌱

Dr. Megan Winton, Senior Scientist at the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, grew up on Florida’s coast and has spent 15+ years studying sharks across the U.S. She now leads research on the recovering Great White Shark population in the Northwest Atlantic, using innovative technology to track their movements and better understand how they interact with humans along Cape Cod and beyond. 🦈🌊

Meet our 2026 Gills Club Scholar 🦈✨

From the coasts of Vermont to Scotland, she’s turning her passion for sharks into action. A graduating senior from the University of Vermont, she’s heading to the University of Edinburgh this fall to pursue a Master’s in Marine Systems & Policy, focusing on shark conservation.

"I have found that fear often arises from a lack of understanding, misinformation, or limited exposure, and hope to help bridge that gap and help more people appreciate, learn about, and better understand these remarkable marine predators."

Can’t wait to follow along with Lindsay on this incredible journey! ✨🌍
