Saugus Girls Golf Report Week #3
Hats off this week for Saugus High Golf Coach Jeff Hallman, who took on the entire agenda for week three with Coach Linam on the sideline recovering from surgery. Coach Hallman took two teams to the upper desert to compete in matches against Palmdale and Quartz Hill. He also orchestrated a tricky, three-way match against Hart and Burbank at Vista Valencia last Tuesday. What’s more, he battled through symptoms of vertigo on Thursday morning, which sent him to the doctor (everything’s good, I’m told), before returning Friday to pass out uniforms to our large team of 25 players. Thanks so much Coach Hallman! As they echo along the fairways of the PGA tour…YOU DA MAN!!!
The first trip was a sojourn to Llano, Ca, a tumbleweed stop off Highway 138 in the upper desert, where the Saugus varsity took on Palmdale along the arid fairways of Crystallaire CC. It was also a lesson in hydration. Remember, we must drink water around the clock to provide our bodies with a coolant system when it comes time to compete. Often times, when athletes wait to drink when they’re thirsty, it’s too late, and they suffer the consequences of cramps, vomiting, and other lovely disorders, while trying to stay competitive. So, make sure you’re drinking a gallon of water a day, which means you’re drinking at home, school, practice, and home again. You almost can’t overdue it. Unfortunately, the above scenario knocked Senior Captain Madilyn Brown out of the Palmdale match after three holes. The others trudged on, with senior Michelle Walker and sophomore Brooke Maxwell tying for medalist honors with solid 45s in their first match over the tricky course. Junior Ellie Castro shot 57 and senior Delaney Hollinger shot 58 to round out the scoring.
One day later, our varsity took on league rival Hart High in a non-league match at Vista. Hart would come out on top 210-231. Once again, it was sophomore Brooke Maxwell leading the way as match medalist with an excellent four-over par 37. Madilyn Brown was next with a seasonal best of 42, followed by Michelle Walker at 46. Delaney Hollinger was next at 52, followed by freshman Regina Lee at 54, and junior Renee De Villa at 55.
Following the match, were seven JVA players duking it out for playing time in league match #1 this week. Leading the way was sophomore Hannah Rutter with a seasonal best of 48. She was followed by Ellie Castro who shot 50 despite a 10 on the last hole. Kayla Cunanan turned in a lifetime best of 51, followed by junior Megan Pote and Danielle Thompson, who each posted 52, also a lifetime best for Danielle, and juniors Bella Hernandez and Grace Fitzgerald who shot 56 and 57 respectively.
On the Chica Course qualifier, sophomore Madelyn Long led the way with a nine-over par 36. Sophomore Melissa Santillan was second for Saugus with a 42. She was followed by freshmen Rachel Villasenor and Tori Bague, and sophomore Kelly Zarate, who each shot 43. Next were freshmen Karlie Gonzales and Mackenzie Crawford with 46s, freshmen Nicole Gonzales and sophomore Laurel De Santis with 47s, freshman Madison Seifert and sophomore Kaia Reichow with 49s, and freshman Morgan Brown at 51.
A day later, our Var/JVA team traveled to Rancho Vista Golf Course in Palmdale to take on Quartz Hill in a non-league match. Quartz Hill won the match 289-310. Renee De Villa led the way for Saugus with a 56, followed by Hannah Rutter at 59. Grace Fitzgerald was next at 64, followed by Kayla Cunanan, 65, Bella Hernandez, 66, and Megan Pote, 67.
The Foothill League matches kickoff later today at Vista and Chica Golf Courses. Both matches begin at 1:30 P.M. Let’s stay hydrated, focus on our short games, and shoot low!
