One question I get a lot is, “Henry, how long have you been coaching?”
It’s a tricky answer. I started watching golf on TV around age 4, then picked up a club at 7. It came naturally to me. By 12, I was Maine Golf State Junior Champion, and by 13 I was volunteering at junior golf camps with my coach, Kevin Joseph.
Those summers, I’d also tee it up with the members at Bath Country Club, the course I grew up on. Times were different back then — my parents would drop me off in the morning and I’d play 27-36 holes most days. Along the way, I started giving tips and watching swings, and even at 13, members 6-7x my age were asking me for advice. I guess I had an eye for coaching early, and loved those conversations as much as the golf itself.
So my honest answer: professionally, 12 years. In my mind, closer to 25. Maybe it’s because I still look young at 34 that I get asked this so often — fitting, since I’ve been named to this year’s Golf Digest Best Young Teachers list.
This one means a lot. It reflects years of hard work and sharing everything I’ve learned with my students and everyone who follows along. My goal has never changed: provide real value and help people enjoy this game more. And I want to keep learning too — I’ll never know it all.
I’m so thankful to the fellow coaches who acknowledged my work here, and to the incredible mentors I’ve had along the way, some of whom are on these lists themselves.
Special thanks to those who’ve impacted me most: Kevin Joseph, John Hickson , Timothy Clark | Art , and my all-star teammates — Milo Lines , Ed Lasater | San Diego Golf Coach , Blake Cannon , Zach Gulley | Golfers Fitness , Collin Siverts , Giulia Sergas, Olympian, Golf Coach, Player, PlantBased 🌱 , and Jaime Garrido
And last but not least, to my amazing wife Dana Fall and my family — thank you for supporting me every step of the way.
It’s been a fun ride, from my first swings in Maine, to coaching college golf, caddying on the LPGA Tour, and building our Online Academy and golf schools with Milo.
There’s much more ahead, but for now I’m looking forward to my next lesson, and the chance to help someone improve and enjoy this game a little more.
