🌫️ Smoke Isn’t Just a Visibility Problem

Wildfire smoke can affect flying even hundreds of miles away from the fires.

Here’s why pilots pay attention:

🔥 Reduced Visibility – Smoke and haze can reduce visibility enough to make VFR flight unsafe or even impossible.

🛩️ IFR May Be Required – If conditions drop below VFR minimums, only pilots who are instrument-rated, flying an IFR-equipped aircraft, and operating under an IFR clearance may legally continue.

🌡️ Performance Matters – Smoke often accompanies hot weather, increasing density altitude and reducing aircraft performance.

😷 Pilot Fatigue – Smoke can irritate your eyes and respiratory system, making flying more demanding.

📡 Situational Awareness – Haze can make it harder to identify traffic, landmarks, and the horizon.

✔️ Before every flight, check METARs, TAFs, NOTAMs, TFRs, and smoke forecasts—not just the view out the window.
