Check out this new resource (link in bio) from the Transgender Health Program to help you provide affirming care for transgender and gender-diverse patients. It offers guidance for mental health providers on writing effective letters of support for gender-affirming surgeries.

Resource includes:
• A step-by-step video tutorial that explains the components of a comprehensive letter, ensuring it meets clinical and insurance requirements.

• A detailed checklist guide to simplify the process and ensure key elements are included. (Linked in the video above)

These tools aim to demystify the letter-writing process and reduce the administrative burden. We encourage all mental health providers to review these materials, as they are vital to improving access to gender-affirming care.

Nearly 4,500 transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults 18+ sought gender-affirming care at University of Utah Health between 2003-2023. And this number is growing!

This research study also found about 15% of those adults were from out of state and 8% lived in rural areas. Why is this type of research so important? Because in order to meet the health needs of the communities we serve, we need a way to identify them in our electronic health records. We do this for many other patient populations already but there is a lack of standardization in how we do this for TGD patients.

To count our communities is to care for them. We can identify health disparities, treat their unique health needs and make practice changes that significantly impact patient experience and clinical care.
