It’s ! Here’s Barry Glacier calving, not just once but twice, caught on video by Earthquake Center field intern Devin Zigmont! Listen closely 🙉 to hear the cracking of the glacier just before the ice falls. The ice makes an impressive BOOM when it hits the water, which shows up on the seismic record at nearby station BAT. Then the train of waves from the small tsunami 🌊 travel outward, much as they would if a far larger landslide occurred in the fjord--one of the reasons we are monitoring this area.

This week, our tsunami scientist Elena Troshina is visiting Wrangell and Petersburg in Southeast Alaska, along with colleagues from the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Coastal Alaska communities live with the most serious tsunami hazard in the United States. The Earthquake Center’s tsunami program works with individual communities to create preparedness products that provide science-based information to help with emergency planning.
In Wrangell, Troshina will present local leaders and emergency managers with a tsunami hazard map based on her latest models of potential tsunami flooding. In Petersburg, where the process is just starting, the tsunami group will meet with decision-makers about community needs. In both places, the tsunami hazard experts will give school and community presentations about tsunami science and safety.
Our community and state partners devote considerable time to help develop valuable tsunami safety resources for the people who live, work, and play in coastal Alaska. To view tsunami hazard areas by community, visit tsunami.alaska.edu.
