On Monday, JR Burkhardt (President) and Sharon Poore (Vice President) of the St. Michaels High School Alumni Association recognized the 2001 SMHS Baseball Team on the 25th anniversary of the first state baseball championship for SMHS. The ceremony took place at SMHS’s Harold Baines Field before the Saints’ varsity baseball game against Easton. The Saints have brought home a state title in 2001, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2017.

TODAY!!
🚨PLEASE COME MONDAY‼️
The 2001 state title is a bigger deal than one might think. In 1990, Brian Femi was named head coach of a stagnant STM baseball program. Over the course of the next 10 years, he diligently worked, brick-by-brick, to build a program that could produce championship-calibur teams. And more importantly, championship-calibur young men.
SAINTS teams in the early 1990s took their share of losses. But the players, coaches & parents knew they were building something special. By the time 1999 rolled around, Halos were indeed playing championship-level baseball but were upset in the region championship. In 2000, SAINTS won the region title and a state semifinal game but lost in the state title game.
Then, in 2001, with the core of the 2000 team returning, plus a pair of key additions, the stage was set. When the 2001 season began, the Bay Hundred boys were clicking on all cylinders. Lost only once in 25 games (to Maryland's top team at the time, Riverdale Baptist, by a 3-2 score on a Crusaders 7th inning steal of home!).
From there, the 2001 SAINTS went on to take the Bayside Conference crown, the East Region crown and the Maryland 1A championship. And, incredibly, ranked #25 in the nation by USA Today at season's end.
2001 paved the way for this tiny school on Maryland's Eastern Shore to reach the penultimate game 10 more times in the 24 years since. Will 2026 be another one of those years? Only time will tell, thanks to the casts of players, coaches, families and friends who helped build this program from the ground up. Thank you, SAINTS Nation. And thank you, 2001‼️
