As the cannabis landscape expands, policy is rapidly shifting from broad definitions to precise molecular science.

In a new article for the Resource Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research (R3CR,) Don Stanford—Assistant Director of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Mississippi and NCCRE team member—explores how regulators are increasingly relying on phytocannabinoid chemistry to build compliance and research frameworks.

R3CR is an NIH-supported collaboration between the University of Mississippi, U.S. Pharmacopeia, and Washington State University designed to help researchers navigate complex regulatory pathways.

Important compliance update for Mississippi medical cannabis license holders:

The DEA has confirmed that Schedule III registration is mandatory for state-licensed medical cannabis businesses in order to comply with federal law as a result of medical cannabis rescheduling. All licensees, including dispensaries, cultivators, processors, testing laboratories, transporters, and waste disposal entities, should begin the registration process immediately.

Businesses that have delayed applying while waiting for a license-specific DEA portal should proceed using the respective forms 224 & 225 (depending on the license type), which can be found and submitted online through the DEA website.

Those operators who have not applied for registration will be in conflict with federal law if they conduct business with a registered Schedule III business.

MSDH is also expected to issue formal communication reinforcing this guidance.
Do not wait until inspections or enforcement activity begins. Submit your application as soon as possible and retain your DEA control number and all application records.

3MA will continue working with state and federal regulators to obtain clarification and will share additional verified guidance as it becomes available.

Understanding the potential role of CBD in sleep requires high-quality scientific data.

NCCRE is partnering with Southern Sky Brands Mississippi on a collaborative clinical research initiative to evaluate the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on sleep quality among adult participants. Researchers will examine sleep duration, sleep quality, and participant-reported wellness measures to help build evidence around CBD-based interventions for sleep-related concerns.

As this work moves forward, NCCRE will continue sharing updates on participant enrollment, study timelines, and research outcomes as they become available.

NCCRE’s Callie Anyan-Draine recently joined colleagues Kate Centellas and Nicholas McAfee for a faculty dialogue hosted by the University of Mississippi’s Center for Practical Ethics. The panel examined the complex role of cannabis in modern society, from patient health to broader social impacts.

Meaningful progress in this field requires these types of interdisciplinary conversations. By bringing together perspectives from pharmacy, anthropology, and psychology, we can better understand the nuances of how cannabis use affects our communities and our healthcare systems.
