Hello Model UN Advisors and Teachers,
Welcome to the BearMUN at Berkeley page!
BearMUN is a high school MUN conference hosted on November 5th and 6th on the UC Berkeley campus. We have the immense privilege of holding this conference in-person for the first time since 2019, and we would love to have your students and MUN teams attend our conference.
UCBMUN is ranked 8th nationally for collegiate MUN teams, and our organization takes great pride in being both dedicated to travel, teaching, and community. At BearMUN, we are committed to delivering the perfect conference experience for you and your delegates, including:
- Specially designed committees that simulate collegiate MUN committees
- A wide variety of general assembly, specialized bodies, and crisis committees, with novice and advanced options for delegates of all experiences
- Highly experienced, trained, and outstanding staffers
- A speaker event that will provide an inside-look into UC Berkeley college life as a whole
- Deals and discounts with local hotels to lower the burden of travel costs
- A dedicated secretariat here to provide you and your team with an amazing conference experience
As MUN competitors, we know how fun and impactful the high school MUN experience can be. We are determined to provide students in California and beyond a fun, rewarding conference experience. We would love to have each of your teams at our conference.

The drill of the week this week is what we call the pen-in-mouth drill. Your first reaction is probably to wonder why anyone would put a pen in their mouth when they’re speaking. Well, it turns out that when you put a pen in your mouth and try to speak it’s challenging. Why? Because it’s difficult to enunciate and be clear with the pen there. Doing this drill will make you have to work harder to be understandable and enunciate more. Overall, this will help you naturally give articulate, powerful speeches in committee!

This week’s drill is shortening speeches! Given that MUN speeches can often be short in length, often being as short as 30 to 45 seconds, it is challenging to be able to get through all of your points. One way to improve at this is by starting off with a longer speech (around 3 minutes) and slowly reduce the length of your speech to 30 seconds. In this process, you’re forced to cut down your speech to only the most important points. You’re also encouraged to think about where you may be wasting time and how to be more efficient! These are all important skills that make it easier to stand up and give a short, impactful speech in committee.

Every week, for the next few weeks, we will be posting a drill of the week. These drills will be helpful for improving speaking skills. Getting better at speaking requires consistent practice, even if it is just for a few minutes a day. This week’s drill is tongue twisters! Tongue twisters are both fun and challenging, and give you a chance to improve your enunciation. There are 7 on the list, and you can choose your favorite ones to practice or even do one every day. A possible way to practice is to say the tongue twister out loud as fast as possible! The goal is to be able to say it very quickly but still be understandable. We are excited to see you all try this out!

If it is within your capacity to donate, we strongly encourage you to do so! Too many black lives have been victimized by a broken and racist criminal justice system that has abused its power for far too long. Model UN's values of collaboration and equity do not stop at the conclusion of conference; we carry these values to uplift black voices and help bring an end to police brutality.

EDIT: We've passed our matching goal of $500, but our alum Jay Mahabal has kindly agreed to match donations & also provide a company match, so incoming donations will still be quadrupled & past donations have now been multiplied by 8!

THE BEARMUN DELEGATE WORKSHOP IS TODAY!!! Come join us to learn from AMAZING delegates like Jessica!!
———
Jessica is a third-year studying Economics and Rhetoric. Originally born & raised in Ohio, Jessica also lived in Beijing for five years. At Berkeley, she chaired UCBMUN for three years, is the current Head Delegate of GAs & SBs, and the incoming president of UCBMUN. Outside of MUN, she's president of CIFMP, the organization distributing free menstrual products on campus, and is a research assistant at Berkeley Law. You can always find her arguing that GA is far superior to crisis and frantically checking plane ticket prices with John McCloud.

Hello! My name is Avani, and I’m a rising junior studying Applied Math and Economics with a minor in English at Cal!! I’m the upcoming Head Delegate of General Assembly and Specialized Bodies for the 20-21 academic year. I’ve traveled to conferences all over the west and east coast, co-chaired the large double del GA at UCBMUN, and served as a Speech Coach for the past 2 semesters, meaning I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time training our team and getting them to scream at walls around the Berkeley campus. Outside of MUN, I loveeee reading, buying everything at Trader Joe’s, and serving as a lab manager at the Human Rights Center @ Berkeley Law. So excited to meet you all!❤️
