In SPLED 410, students worked together to create posters exploring Canale and Swain’s four-part model of communicative competence. They discussed what teachers should consider before referring multilingual learners for special education evaluation, with a focus on understanding students’ language development and communication skills.

Today our Spled third year students kicked off their first lesson with the PSU/SCASD Lifelink students! Mr. Matt & Mr. Jack did a fantastic job presenting on health and wellness. They started off their lesson with a mini-golf icebreaker that was a hole in one! ⛳️

During this semester, students from 395W are out in the schools learning about the many different types of classrooms that are in special education. We are appreciative of the amazing partnerships we have with schools, mentors, and districts that allow for such amazing collaboration!

Last week our seniors kicked off an amazing collaboration between Agricultural Education, Physical Education, and PSU Lifelink to support general education teachers in designing meaningful lessons while considering specially designed instruction. Dr. Lauren Cozad led a workshop on reading and writing IEPs then the students created triads to practice the skill in action.

Afterwards we did some Cardio Drumming with the LifeLink_PSU students. It’s so amazing to be able to provide authentic experiences filled with collaboration across the university! Special thanks to Lydia Everhart, Dr. Laura Rice, and Dr. Jonna Belanger for the fantastic teamwork. 💙

HUGE congratulations are in order for two of our amazing faculty on their promotions this year! Dr. Lydia Ocasio-Stoutenburg was promoted to an Associate professor and Dr. Jonte (JT) Taylor was promoted to a Full professor and is our new Professor in Charge (PIC). Their contributions to our program and the field are beyond appreciated and priceless. We are truly so PSU Proud of all they have accomplished and all they will continue to. From capitol hill to the classrooms on campus- you can find both Dr. O and Dr. T advocating for individuals with disabilities, and this world is a better place because of their efforts 💙

Our students have MasterED it! Congrats to our 27 students who graduated this weekend from our residential Master’s in Special Education program! This cohort has been beyond amazing over their time here at PSU. We have 9 BRITE Students who graduated, 5 students who came from outside of education, and 13 who came to us from an undergraduate program in general education. We are so proud of each of them and cannot wait to see all of the amazing things they accomplish!
