🌺🐝New paper from our lab. How do bee communities change as we move from tropical lowlands to the high Andes? This study highlights how elevational gradients shape pollinator communities and functional traits.
We surveyed bee communities across a 3,000-meter elevational gradient in the Colombian Andes, spanning 14 sites from lowland forests to high-elevation ecosystems. We found dramatic changes in bee diversity and community composition with elevation. Sites separated by more than 1,000 meters in elevation shared less than 1% of their species, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity turnover that characterizes Andean landscapes.
Bee richness declined sharply with elevation, from an average of 26 species at lower elevations to just 3–4 species above 3,000 meters. We also found that high-elevation bee communities were composed of larger-bodied species with relatively shorter wings and legs, patterns consistent with classic ecological predictions related to thermoregulation.
These findings provide the first comprehensive assessment of how bee diversity and functional traits vary across an elevational gradient in the Andes. As climate change continues to alter mountain ecosystems, understanding how bee communities are distributed across elevation is essential for predicting future impacts on biodiversity and pollination services.
