Some connections to Penn State go back generations.

Julia McDowell was raised in Beaver County, while Dan McDowell's family once farmed the land where Penn State Beaver stands today.

Now, the couple is honoring that legacy with a $50,000 scholarship for students transferring to Penn State Beaver from one of the University's closing Commonwealth Campuses.

A $100,000 gift from Anne Eisert and Jim Piersol will expand the Lion’s Pantry at Penn State Behrend, where students can anonymously request free supplies of food and personal-care products. The endowed fund will provide more than 130 additional bags of food to students every year.

Nearly two-thirds of people released from prison are rearrested within three years. Yet research from the RAND Corporation shows that, for those who earn a college degree while incarcerated, recidivism rates can fall as low as 5 percent.

The Penn State Restorative Justice Initiative has offered classes and workshops in Pennsylvania prisons and jails for ten years. In January 2025, they further realized that vision with the launch of the Penn State Prison Education Program — a Penn State bachelor's degree offered in a Pennsylvania state prison.
