It's time for our Pennsylvania 4-H Volunteer Spotlight! Each week, Pennsylvania 4-H highlights volunteers who are doing great work around the state.

Today, we are celebrating Makayla Gilbert of Juniata County!

Makayla is a life-long 4-H'er and an 8-year volunteer for the Cottontails club in Juniata County. 4-H parents in her club say that “She is a top notch club leader. She has a wealth of knowledge about rabbits, makes sure relevant topics are covered during member presentations, keeps the kids engaged during the presentations, holds all members accountable for their learning during member presentations, puts on a mock show every year prior to the fair to make sure members are prepared, and answers member questions day or night. My kids were fortunate to have her as their rabbit leader for many years!”

Hey young showpeople!

As you prepare for your county fair, remember your animal is your teammate, not just a project. Be patient and kind, especially when they're nervous. Congratulate your fellow competitors - they worked hard too! Listen to judges' feedback and thank everyone who helped you along the way.

It's time to speak up! 🎤🎤🎤

Registration is now open for the 2026 PA 4‑H State Presentation and Public Speaking Contests.

Both events will be held virtually on July 22 as two separate contests. Youth are welcome to participate in one or both contests.

The Presentation Contest challenges 4‑H members to demonstrate their skills in planning, organizing, and delivering educational demonstrations. A presentation focuses on a project‑related topic and involves teaching or physically demonstrating how to complete a specific phase of a project. Presentations may be given by either an individual or a team.

The Public Speaking Contest supports county public speaking programs while helping 4‑H members build strong communication skills. This contest focuses on speech content, organization, and delivery.
