《When reproduction becomes a labor problem: The Gendered Labor Regime Under Industrial Transplantation》
As the world's largest semiconductor foundry and contract chipmaker, TSMC is a critical player in global semiconductor production. Since 2020, TSMC has developed a major advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Arizona. This webinar will examine how industrial transplantation reshapes the relationship between production and social reproduction. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork across multiple stages of TSMC Arizona, the speaker develops the concept of the gendered labor regime: a firm-centered configuration comprising production and reproductive regimes whose alignment underpins productive capability, showing that industrial transplantation relocates a production regime into institutional and normative environments where the reproductive regime that previously sustained it can no longer be assumed to emerge. Whether alignment is reconstituted depends on the relationship between the institutional and normative conditions of the home and host societies and workers' differential embeddedness across them.
