Huge congratulations to the M.A. in Sports Management program on the incredible success of the first annual Sports Management Summer Symposium!

This inaugural event gave graduate students in our online M.A. in Sports Management program an exclusive inside look at the sports industry and access to network with current students and program alumni.

Thank you to keynote speaker Pat Manak, Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), for sharing your insights.

Graduate Student Spotlight: Timothy Desmond

Timothy Desmond, a current Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate student, recently published an article in Counseling Today, the national magazine for the American Counseling Association (ACA)!

In his piece, "Reinvention at Midlife: Lessons from Both Sides of the Desk," Timothy challenges preconceived notions about middle age, exploring how shifting perspectives can foster powerful personal growth and career reinvention—a journey that ultimately brought him to JCU.

When reflecting on his experience returning to higher education, Timothy shared: “JCU made it really easy to enroll as a non-traditional grad student because they’ve laid out the process clearly. The professors and advisors have really helped guide me through the program and figure out how I might specialize as a licensed counselor.”

John Carroll University is closed today in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth marks the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of the past but a call to action for the future. Let us come together to honor the resilience, contributions, and enduring spirit of African Americans.

😎 Summer Spotlight: Congratulations to Shayna Evenchik, '24, '26G, (pictured 2nd from left) who recently presented her original research on "Associations Between VO₂max and Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Performance in Career Firefighters" at the 2026 American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT.

Shayna extends a massive thank you to her Exercise Physiology faculty mentors—Dr. Jackie Zera (pictured left), Dr. Anna Simonson (pictured right), and Dr. Carol Mack—for their unwavering guidance and support throughout the research and presentation process.

Beyond sharing her findings, Shayna spent the week networking with global experts and exploring groundbreaking research in exercise physiology. Onward, On!

We're still thinking about the 2026 Graduate Commencement Ceremony - here are some long overdue pictures capturing the day. As we reflect on the ceremony and the path onward for our grads, we're reminded of this powerful advice from our 2026 Commencement Speaker, Catherine Hickman, Assistant General Manager of the Cleveland Browns, (pictured in slide 2):

"You are graduating into a world that is complicated and fast-moving and full of uncertainty. But you're also graduating with something that not everyone has: perspective. You know the difference between what matters and what doesn't because you've had to make the calculation in real life under real pressure with real stakes. Use that. Let it be your advantage. Let your winding path be the source of your wisdom, not your shame. Let your network be built on substance and reciprocity, and let yourselves want the big things out loud, unapologetically, without waiting until you feel entirely ready."

Today, we are honoring the accomplishments of over 200 graduates participating in our Graduate Commencement Ceremony. As the Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Canda, shared in our May 2026 Graduate School newsletter, "We hope that students who are celebrating the completion of their programs will remain active members of our Graduate School community, as well as take time to rest and celebrate as they look back on their many successes during their time at JCU".

The featured individuals over the past 8 days capture a glimpse of the range of opportunities and growth that have been made by our JCU graduate school students in their time as master's students. Check out their stories by clicking on the link in our bio.🔗

Onward, on to all receiving a graduate degree today 💙⚡️

Commencement Spotlight: Mariam Hammoud, School Counseling (M.Ed.) 🎓

Mariam Hammoud, '26G entered the M.Ed. in School Counseling program with a clear mission: to be an advocate for students who feel unheard and to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for growth. Her journey was marked by instrumental practicum and internship experiences, including the opportunity to co-present at the Ohio School Counselor Conference alongside a professor. These experiences helped Mariam build the confidence and professional skills necessary to be a mentor for her future students. She credits the JCU community for her growth, stating, “The faculty at JCU truly made me a better person, student, and professional. The support, encouragement, and knowledge shared by all of my professors will stay with me in my professional and personal life”. After graduation, Mariam will begin her career as a full-time school counselor, continuing her commitment to positively influence the lives of future students.
