What an incredible few days at the 2026 Celebrating Rural Maine Colloquium! From August 10–12, educators from across rural Maine came together at Schoodic Institute for learning, reflection, collaboration, and connection.

We were inspired by powerful keynote conversations with Maulian Bryant of the Wabanaki Alliance and Libby Bischof of the University of Southern Maine, who explored the Solutionary Framework and discovered new ways to use primary sources from the Library of Congress' vast collection and the Maine Memory Network, shared by Hannah McClean from the Maine Historical Society.

Teachers had time to examine challenges and opportunities within their own communities, engage in systems thinking, begin developing their Solutionary projects, and share ideas and feedback with colleagues. Evening experiences provided meaningful opportunities to build community and connect learning to place.

We appreciate our wonderful spotlight educators Jaylene Roths and Kyle McLellan who shared their own Solutionary projects, as well as every educator who brought their curiosity, creativity, and commitment to making a difference in rural Maine communities. We left with new ideas, new connections, and a shared commitment to empowering students to become thoughtful, engaged solutionaries in their own communities.

They unlock the creative process by integrating art, design, and education, inviting active participation in the making and meaning of art. Spanning cultures from ancient times to the present, their collection fosters accessibility, inclusion, and meaningful connections across communities. This after-hours opportunity will feature an hors d’oeuvres reception with a cash bar in the Grand Gallery. NCHE’s typical PD is primarily centered on history. For the third time, we’ve been privileged to lead training that expands our focus through our Space Age on the Space Coast program. These week-long workshops gave educators the chance to build rockets, hear from astronauts, and tour launch sites, museums, and exhibitions at the Kennedy Space Center.

We celebrate the opportunity to expand professional learning beyond a singular discipline, because history has always been interdisciplinary. The more passion a learner finds in any subject, the more opportunities educators have to nurture connections and build enthusiasm for learning.

Thank you to the NASA's Kennedy Space Center and the Astronauts Memorial Foundation for having us, and the National Endowment for the Humanities for funding this program!

To celebrate your return to the classroom, NCHE is excited to share three free learning opportunities for all history teachers, created to further your classroom’s success throughout the school year. Hosted by three history education experts, these Back-to-School webinars offer: (1) new learnings on George Washington through primary sources, video series for students, and interactive online activities; (2) tools to help infuse the World Cup excitement into your classroom through examining themes of colonization, migration, globalization, cultural exchange, nationalism, and identity; and (3) practical approaches to teaching history in ten minutes in the Elementary classroom.

Educators from all fifty states engaged directly with history at a summit hosted by NCHE in partnership with William & Mary. Grounded in America 250 and early American History and Civics connections, the We the Teachers: Congress of Educators Summit invited teachers to consider not only what is taught, but how and why it is taught. Participants learned from leading historians and scholars, built relationships, toured historic sites, and experienced place-based learning and curated workshops. Our organization is privileged to have led this project alongside William & Mary, grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside teachers as they prepare for another year in the classroom, and hopeful that our participants left with learnings and relationships that will enrich their professional lives.
