✨ Internship Spotlight ✨

Gift - N5 Nursing Student

My internship on the cardiac progressive care unit has been an incredible learning experience. It gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I've learned throughout nursing school while gaining confidence in a real clinical setting.

One of my favorite parts of the internship was the hands-on experience. I enjoyed performing skills such as IV insertions, blood draws, NG tube insertions, patient assessments, and charting. I also learned a great deal about cardiac medications, common cardiac conditions and terminology, and the nurse's role in caring for patients before and after various cardiac procedures.

Ellie - N4 Nursing Student

Throughout my internship I was exposed to many different patient diagnoses and learned how to best care for them. As I gained confidence, my preceptor allowed me to be the lead nurse for my 3-4 patients, which taught me how to best prioritize each patient and cluster care.

I was also able to visit different units, like maternity, and see procedures in the cath lab. Overall, I feel that this internship better prepared me to become a nurse and showed me what type of nurse I want to be.

My internship was in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Covenant HealthCare.

Every shift has brought new learning experiences, helping me strengthen my assessment skills, develop my clinical judgment, and gain confidence in providing patient care.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside incredibly knowledgeable and supportive nurses who have generously shared their skills, encouraged my growth, and served as outstanding mentors.

This experience has reinforced my passion for nursing, and I’m excited to continue learning and growing as I work toward becoming a registered nurse.

✨ Internship Spotlight ✨

Claylee - N4 Nursing Student

During my internship, I rotated through the Neuro ICU and Trauma ICU, where I developed and strengthened a wide range of nursing skills, including dressing changes, Foley catheter insertion, IV insertion, medication administration, and medication calculations. I also learned how to care for ventilated patients, manage chest tubes, Buck's traction, and perform hemodynamic monitoring.

Beyond technical skills, I gained firsthand experience in the importance of interdisciplinary communication, collaborating closely with members of the healthcare team to provide safe, high-quality patient care. I also learned that caring for critically ill patients means caring for their families as well - advocating for patients, providing emotional support, and helping families navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Internship has been the highlight of nursing school. My preceptors shared invaluable knowledge, and mentorship, which increased my confidence. My advice to future students is simple: say "yes" to every opportunity. Step outside your comfort zone, ask questions, and be eager to learn—you'll get out of your internship exactly what you put into it.

What an incredible week at SimGHOSTS 2026!

We were thrilled to welcome 350+ attendees and volunteers, 30+ simulation vendors, and offer 163 sessions focused on learning, innovation, and all things healthcare simulation. 🩺💻

Beyond the numbers, it was an amazing opportunity to connect with fellow simulation specialists from across the world, share ideas, discover new technology, and bring home fresh inspiration to continue advancing simulation education at SVSU.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make SimGHOSTS 2026 such a memorable experience! ❤️💙

I was not sure I was going to like Observation at first because I’ve worked in the ICU for the past 5 years and before that, 2 years on a fast-paced Cardio floor. Wow, was I wrong! Observation truly strengthened my assessment skills and core nursing skills overall. I had such a wonderful experience I am considering Observation upon graduation.

Kirsten - N4 Nursing student

During my internship experience I found my love for Emergency Room nursing. I was offered multiple jobs during my experience and was blessed to have so many opportunities, and to work alongside compassionate nurses. I am very thankful that I was able to be a part of all of my patient's healthcare journeys.
