Before a Carolina praying mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) egg case (called an ootheca) hatches, you'll often notice a few changes:
Color darkens – The egg case may change from light tan to a darker brown or grayish color.
More brittle and dry – It can look drier and slightly weathered than when it was first laid.
Tiny dark lines or slits appear – The rows where the baby mantises will emerge may become more noticeable.
Looks like it is starting to happen.
