Open House Guest Speaker Spotlight!

Meet Laura Williams a Wildlife Biologist with Maine Audubon. Laura is one of multiple guest speakers who will be joining us on Sunday, Sept. 17th from 11AM-3PM to present on active conservation work being conducted in our region.

Laura received her B.S. in Wildlife Conservation from Unity College in Maine. Her wildlife fieldwork experience ranges from flying around Alaska in helicopters and bush planes for shorebird and songbird surveys in the remote tundra as well as mist- netting, tagging, and tracking bats to working in the North Maine woods capturing, collaring, and tracking white-tailed deer.

At Maine Audubon, Laura focuses her time on the Coastal Birds Project and the Fish Lead Free initiative. She spreads the Fish Lead Free word by educating anglers about Maine’s lead tackle law, encouraging them to use lead-free tackle alternatives, and providing lead recycling options for old lead tackle and fishing line. Laura has worked as the field crew lead for the Coastal Birds Project since 2019, protecting nesting areas and habitat for endangered Piping Plovers and Least Terns. Through this project, she trains volunteers to help monitor Piping Plovers as well as educate beachgoers about plovers and our other incredible migratory shorebirds that stopover on Maine’s beaches in spring and fall.

Come meet Laura and our other speakers here at Center for Wildlife on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 11AM-3PM. For more information and to book your tickets, head to thecenterforwildlife.org/events

How many Maine Lighthouses have you seen?

Have a Brazzle dazzle day!

It’s ! There are few landscapes as picturesque as a lighthouse along a coast. But the quiet postcard image belies a dramatic history, one filled with heroism and adversity. National parks along both coasts and the shores of our Great Lakes tell illuminating stories with lighthouses, lifesaving stations, artifacts, and exhibits. They remind us of our nation’s maritime history and of the families and individuals who braved the elements to offer safe passage and save lives. What lighthouses have you visited?
