Led by faculty coach Kimberly Carballo, and as a community partner in service learning for many Jacobs School of Music students, ROK’s goal is two-fold: to introduce area children to opera through an engaging first experience as audience members, and to give developing professional singers and instrumentalists an opportunity to hone their performance skills. The musicians donate their preparation
and performance time, and ROK provides free performances and curriculum guides to students K-12. ROK has been enthusiastically received in many of the area elementary schools as well as public libraries and homeschool groups; this year we have been invited to present in hospital settings as well. Every group that has hosted us has invited us to return, and every year the project has expanded; as cuts to education and the arts have become increasingly drastic, schools in particular are eager to take advantage of this opportunity for their students that comes at no cost to the school system.
