💛 MEET LaShon Rogers 💛
Physical Education Teacher | Union County High School

LaShon didn't have the best home life growing up. She had to be the head of her household early. But there was a teacher at JHS—not even her teacher—who listened to her, gave her advice, and held her accountable. That teacher changed everything. Now LaShon does the same for her students. 🏃

Her Mission:
Her students might not be the best athletes in class. But LaShon sees their potential. She brings them out of their shell. She raises their confidence. And students who used to hate PE? They love her class.

What She Wants Them to Know:
"You don't have to be good. Just try and you may surprise yourself. Don't ever think you can't do something."

Her Story:
A few years ago, LaShon was unable to physically participate with her students—she uses a wheelchair. But that didn't stop her from being a role model. She adapted, she taught, she inspired. And her students responded by trying out for volleyball, basketball, soccer—sports they never thought they could do.

The Silent Student:
She had a student who never talked to anyone in class. At the end of a comprehensive health lesson, completely deadpan, she told LaShon: "You're a fun teacher and I thought you needed to know that." Those quiet moments stick with her.

Real LaShon:
• Legacy: Physical activity doesn't have to be grueling—it can be fun if you adapt it to your personality
• Advice: Make it fun and they'll do it without being told
• Truth: Her students keep her young and relevant

Her Impact:
When former students see her and introduce her to their families, that's when she knows she made a difference.

Sitting Down with the Superintendent

Thank you, Union County!

Last night, community members joined us at Foster Park Elementary for Inside Our Schools: A Community Walkthrough. Guests walked the halls, toured classrooms, and got a firsthand look at where our Foster Park students learn each day. We’re grateful to our speakers for sharing their time, experiences, and perspectives with those in attendance.

A special thank-you to the Foster Park faculty and staff for opening their doors and welcoming our community. And thank you to everyone who came out, asked questions, and took part in the conversation about our school facilities.

Events like this give our community an opportunity to step inside our schools, see them firsthand, and be part of the conversation.

🥁 A Special Performance at Our Board Meeting! 🎶
Our Board of Trustees had some special guests at last night’s meeting! Monarch Elementary School 5th graders shared their talents with a steel drum performance, led by their teacher, Abbey Cox.

We’re proud of these students for sharing what they’ve been learning and bringing a little music to our board meeting!

📅 2027–2028 SCHOOL CALENDAR APPROVED

At last night’s meeting, the Union County Schools Board of Trustees officially approved the 2027–2028 Modified School Calendar.

We’re sharing it early to give our families and staff plenty of time to plan ahead for the upcoming school year!

🍎 Teacher Spotlight: Gabrielle Manus

Meet Gabrielle Manus, a 5th grade teacher at Buffalo Elementary!

Gabrielle says one of her favorite things to do outside of school is pretty simple — nap whenever she gets the chance. 😴 And honestly, after teaching 5th grade all day, we get it.

Her students also keep her laughing (and humble). One student once asked her, Haven’t you worn that shirt before? Apparently, wearing an outfit more than once is now against the rules. 😂

She also had flowers delivered to school one day and wouldn’t tell her students who sent them. Of course, that turned into a full investigation as they tried to figure out who her “secret admirer” was. 💐😂

A few other things about Gabrielle: her karaoke song is "Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, she once considered becoming a photographer or pediatric nurse, and at some point she found herself Googling, How do you get an air bubble out of a squishy toy without putting a hole in it? 🤣

We’re glad to have Gabrielle at Buffalo Elementary and love getting the chance to introduce the people who make our schools such special places.

We’re thankful to have teachers like Gabby bringing personality, laughter, and plenty of memorable moments to our classrooms at Buffalo Elementary!
