Meltdown vs. Shutdown
Both can be responses to emotional, sensory, or environmental overload.
🔹 Meltdown = outward response
Crying, yelling, visible distress
🔹 Shutdown = inward response
Silence, withdrawal, reduced responsiveness
Same overload. Different response.
What helps:
• Reduce demands
• Lower sensory input
• Stay calm
• Give space
💡 In ABA, we focus on understanding the function of behavior and teaching skills that support communication, coping, and self-regulation.
The goal isn’t control—it’s understanding.
Save this if it helps. ❤️

A shutdown isn’t “refusing” or “bad behavior”
It’s often a sign of overwhelm.
A child may go quiet, withdraw, or struggle to respond when things feel like too much.
What you can do in those moments 🤔?
• Calm presence
• Less talking, less pressure
• Space and time to regulate

Meltdowns are not misbehavior
They are an intense response to sensory overload, stress or overwhelm.
In these moments, it is best to offer support and patience 💙

Why routine matters for autistic people?🤔
Routine can have a massive role in supporting the autistic wellbeing.
For many autistic people, routine creates a sense of predictability, this can help reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation and create a sense of safety 💙.

🧐RBT vs BCBA in ABA Therapy
👩⚕️ RBTs work directly with your child in therapy sessions. The RBTs run therapy sessions while following the behavior plan and collect progress data to help build skills and support learning.
📊 BCBAs create and review the treatment plan for your child. They assess needs and behaviors and adjust plans to make sure progress is consistent.
🤝 Together, they collaborate to support your child’s development 💙
