8.31: First day of college.
9.15: We started Step 1 of my 10-Step Career Success Program™.

And now? SHE GOT THE JOB. 💕🎉

As her mom, I’m proud. As a career coach, I’m paying attention to what this moment represents.

Kayla is studying Culinary Arts, so we were not looking for just any part-time job. We wanted an opportunity that would help her keep building career capital through experience, customer service, professional relationships, and industry exposure.

Now she’ll be working gaining experience inside an actual kitchen environment while continuing her education. That matters.

🎯BIG FACTS: Career development does not begin when you graduate from college. It begins when you recognize what you already bring to the table and start making intentional moves.

That is why I created the 10-Step Career Success Program™. Not just to help someone get a job, but to teach them how to build a career.

📸 Four years ago today, I announced that after 28 years, I was leaving the Union Public Library.

I was good at my job. At least I like to believe I was. 😂

But I had also reached a point where I could admit two things:

The community needed someone new. And I needed something new.
That second one mattered.
Because sometimes we stay in places simply because we know how to succeed there.

Leaving eventually created the pathway that led me into government, workforce and economic development with HCOBO, while continuing to build my work as a career coach, strategist and community builder.

📍 As your coach, here’s today’s reminder:

You don’t have to hate your job to leave it.
You don’t have to be failing to know it’s time.
And being good at something doesn’t mean you have to do it forever.

Sometimes growth requires recognizing when a chapter has done exactly what it was supposed to do.

“I’ve done some really good things in the middle of some really hard things.”

I've been moving.
Not always walking into rooms as somebody's employee, founder, coach, mom or the person responsible for making everything happen.

Sometimes I'm simply walking in as Erica.

And lately, I've been walking. Literally. A mile here. A little more there.

Talking. Thinking. Laughing. Getting some air. Finding my way back to myself.

Those little walks have given me more than exercise.

They've given me solace.

And maybe that's what this season is teaching me.

Gratitude does not mean nothing hurts.
Peace does not mean everything is perfect.

Joy does not require you to pretend the heavy stuff isn't heavy.

Sometimes gratitude is being able to look at everything you're carrying and still say:

God, thank You for what is growing. Thank You for what is working. Thank You for the people who love me. Thank You for the doors opening. Thank You for the strength to keep going. And thank You for the wisdom to know when I need to put some of this sh$t DOWN.

I'm learning to celebrate while I'm still becoming.

To enjoy what I've built instead of immediately asking, "What's next?"
To sit in the moment a little longer.

To acknowledge myself.

Because "I've done some really good things in the middle of some really hard things."

And today, that is enough.

I'm full. I'm grateful. I'm finding peace. I'm choosing joy.
And I'm making room for more of all four.

One of the questions I ask clients sounds simple:
“Tell me what you do.”

And almost immediately, I hear a job title.
“I’m an administrative assistant.”
“I’m a program manager.”
“I work in customer service.”
“I’m a teacher.”

But then I keep asking questions.
What do people come to you for?
What problems do you solve?
What have you improved?
What are you really good at?

And suddenly, I hear a completely different story.
📍 As your coach, here’s today’s reminder: Your job title is not your career story.

A title tells me what the organization called you.
Your career story tells me:

• What you know
• What you can do
• What you've accomplished
• Who you've helped
• What problems you can solve

That distinction matters when you're applying for a job, changing industries, networking, interviewing or asking someone to open a door for you.

🔑 Don't just tell people what your title was.

Learn how to tell them what you bring to the table.

💎[re•sults] In my quiet moments, these are the messages that mean the most to me.

⏰️Friday. 5:09 PM.

“Hey I GOT A JOB!!!!!!”

✍️🏽After the résumé conversations. The career strategy. The applications. The encouragement. The reminders not to give up. The work of helping someone see what they bring to the table.

A message like this comes through. And I sit there smiling because somebody’s life just shifted.

This is why I became a career coach.

Not just to help people find jobs. To help people get clear, recognize their value, tell their story and create a pathway to what’s next.

📍 As your coach, here’s today’s reminder:
Sometimes the work feels quiet before the win shows up.

Keep building. Keep positioning yourself. Keep asking. Keep applying strategically. Keep moving. Your next “I GOT A JOB!!!!!!” message might be closer than you think.

🔑❓️ Key question [what’s next?]
My daughter just started her first month of college.

And as proud as I am of this new chapter, the career coach in me is already thinking beyond the classroom.
Because Kayla is not starting from zero.
She has worked summer jobs. Volunteered. Danced. Performed in plays. Participated in ROTC. Interned at a bake shop. Worked with customers. Learned how to show up, communicate and work with different people.

👩🏽‍🍳 And now she is studying Culinary Arts.

When I look at all of that, I don’t just see activities.
I see career capital.
Skills. Experience. Responsibility. Work ethic. Relationships. Exposure.

But before we build the résumé, create the LinkedIn profile or start applying for jobs, we’re starting with mindset.

She does not have to have her entire life figured out at 18.

She does need to start asking better questions.
What have you learned about yourself? What are you good at? What do you want to learn next? What kind of opportunities will help you grow?

And ultimately:
What do you want next?

[re·set]You are not starting from zero. You are starting from experience. Before you update your résumé and start applying everywhere, take inventory.

A layoff can create urgency.

But urgency can also make you start moving before you know where you're going.

• Your skills did not disappear with your title • Your accomplishments still matter • Your relationships are part of your career capital • Your experience can transfer • Your next move deserves a strategy

Before you apply, ask:

What did I accomplish? What problems did people trust me to solve? What skills can I take somewhere else? Who is already in my network? What do I want next?

🔑 Take inventory first. Then build the strategy.

[her•sto•ry] My first job started when I was 14 years old.

It was 1994, and I was a Page at Union Public Library.

📍 As your coach, here’s today’s reminder: • Your first job does not have to be your forever career • Pay attention to the skills you are building • Exposure matters • Relationships matter • Every experience can teach you something you can carry forward

I stayed connected to Union Public Library for 28 years and eventually became a Library Branch Manager before leaving in 2022.

What started as “just a job” became part of the foundation for how I work today.

The communication. The leadership. The customer service. The community relationships. The confidence. The ability to work with all kinds of people.

I did not know at 14 where any of it would lead.

But I was learning.

🔐So if you are early in your career, do not only ask, “Is this my dream job?”

Years passed. Challenges came. Life happened. But our baby girl kept going.
