The aerobic in-vessel food and organics composting demonstration project at Kean University is designed to process 1,000 lbs./day of food scraps into rich, organic compost in just 5 days.

Update! Fall 2018 (Sept-Dec) composting totals are in! Food and wood (both redirected from landfilling/incineration).

The KU Composter is back in action! February totals:
Food added: 2,410 lbs! (1.25 TONS!)
Wood (Bulking Agent/Carbon Source): 659 lbs!
Total amount DIVERTED from a landfill: 3,259 lbs!
A solid amount for 6 processing days!
Composter Milestone - 500,000 lbs of food scraps have been composted.
By the end of 2015,
Food scraps were processed on 98 days
1105 buckets of food scraps were processed
44543 pounds of food scraps were processed
13040 pounds of wood scraps were used
Approximately 600 Kean faculty, students, and staff visited the composter, with an additional 170 visitors (approximate) from outside of the University.
By the end of this October, our composter had been running for 610 days, and processed total 439752 lbs food wastes. The composter also attracted 124 visiters including students and faculty during September and October.
The Kean University composting is processing everyday since the start of the Fall Semester....Updated monthly info to follow shortly!
