I was 52 miles from my delivery when I decided I was done driving for the night.

Dispatch couldn't understand why.

My name is Ray. I'm 62, and I've been driving trucks for 36 years.

I'd started before sunrise.

The first shipper kept me waiting almost four hours. Then an accident backed up the interstate, and by the time traffic finally opened up, I'd already been awake most of the day.

But I kept moving.

Around 9 p.m., I noticed myself doing something that every experienced driver knows is a warning.

I couldn't remember the last few miles.

I knew I'd driven them.

I just couldn't remember them.

That's when I took the next exit.

There was a truck stop about two miles off the interstate.

I pulled in, found one of the last spaces, set the brakes, and shut everything down.

Then my phone rang.

Dispatch.

“You're only 52 miles away.”

I told them I knew.

They said the receiver was expecting me that night and asked if I could finish the run.

I looked out the windshield at the trucks parked around me.

Then I said, “That freight can wait until morning. I'm done.”

They tried again.

“It's less than an hour.”

Maybe on a computer screen.

But when you're exhausted, 52 miles can feel like 500.

I closed the sleeper curtains, turned my phone down, and went to sleep.

At 5:15 the next morning, I woke up.

I grabbed a coffee, washed my face, checked the truck, and got back on the interstate.

I arrived a little after 6.

The receiver opened the gate.

They unloaded me.

Nobody yelled.

Nobody asked why I was late.

They just wanted the freight.

Thirty-six years behind the wheel taught me something dispatch sometimes forgets.

A delivery appointment is a time written on a screen.

The person behind the wheel has to actually make it there alive.

I'd rather explain why I'm 8 hours late than have somebody explain why I'm never coming home.
