Superintendent's Message for March 27, 2026 (Spanish & Mandarin translations link included)
At our March 4 Board meeting, we adopted a resolution recognizing April as Arab American Heritage Month. You can view the resolution here: Link to Resolution.
The New Haven community is strengthened by the many students, families, and staff members with roots in Arab nations. We value the rich diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives they contribute to our schools and workplaces. Observing Arab American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to affirm the dignity of every member of our community and to continue fostering a strong sense of belonging.
This is also the time of year when we begin celebrating the accomplishments of our students, employees, and schools. Our Employees of the Year were recently selected and we are proud to recognize our overall winners:
Jamilia Williams - Hesham “Mo” Moussa Classified Employee of the Year
John Sowell - Casey Rodriguez Certificated Employee of the Year.
You can access the complete list of site and district award recipients here.
Earlier this month, we also held our second Celebrating Schools event. You can watch a video of that event here.
One area of need across our schools is upgrading the internal communication systems that support intercoms, alarms, and other critical functions. Thanks to Measure N, we are installing new systems at all school sites (the system at James Logan High School will be included as part of its ongoing redesign).
These upgrades address three key areas:
Improving classroom communication
Enhancing schoolwide communication
Strengthening school safety
In addition, the new systems provide real-time translation to better support our multilingual community.
Finally, our Board of Education will move its April meeting from April 14 to April 21 due to scheduling conflicts. Please note this change if you plan to attend or watch the meeting.
That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
John Thompson, Ed.D.
Superintendent
