🚨📦 September is National Preparedness Month! 📦🚨

This is your annual reminder to take steps to prepare for emergencies. Whether it's a natural disaster or an unexpected event, being prepared can make all the difference. What's one preparedness step you'll take this month? (e.g., update your emergency kit, make a family plan, sign up for alerts!)

📚✨ Every Story Opens a New World! ✨📚

Today, on International Literacy Day, we celebrate the power of reading, writing, and lifelong learning. Literacy is more than learning words—it's building confidence, unlocking opportunities, and empowering students to dream big.

At New Haven Unified School District, we're committed to fostering a love of reading and ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Together, we can inspire the next generation of curious minds, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners.

📖 Pick up a book, read together as a family, visit your local library, or encourage a young reader today—every page turned is a step toward a brighter future.

Superintendent's Message for September 4, 2026 (Spanish & Mandarin translations link included)

Dear New Haven Families,

As we head into the Labor Day weekend, I want to take a moment to thank all of the hardworking employees who make New Haven Unified such a special place. Our teachers, classified staff, administrators, and support teams work every day to make a difference for our students and families. I would also like to thank NHTA, CSEA, and NHAA for their partnership with the district. While these groups are strong advocates for their members, our work together has made New Haven a better place for staff members and students.

The uptick in immigration enforcement activities across the country reinforces our efforts to provide resources for students, families, and staff members. Each site and school district department now has readily available resources in multiple languages in the main offices. We have also curated these resources in an easy-to-find location on our website. You can access this site here. Staff is available to assist families however we can at our sites. Please inquire at the school or district office if you need support.

If you are interested in the renaming of Cesar Chavez Middle School and you haven’t provided input yet, it is not too late to do so. We have put all information about the process and how you can provide input in one place on our website, which you can access here.

In last week’s update, I shared that Science in the Park is back this year. I also shared that Alameda County Supervisor Eliza Marquez’s office is considering offering transportation from Union City/South Hayward to and from the event. They want to gauge interest in whether transportation is needed. However, I shared the wrong “interest” link last week. You can find the correct link here. You can learn more about this event here: Science in the Park.

I hope you all have a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved long weekend. Enjoy the time with family and friends, and thank you for all you do!

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D.

As we step into Self-Care Awareness Month, let's remember that self-care looks different for everyone. It's about listening to what you need in any given moment – whether it's quiet time, movement, connection, or rest. Be gentle with yourself this month. ✨🌿 💖🌸💆‍♀️🧘‍♂️

Superintendent's Message for August 28, 2026 (Spanish & Mandarin translations link included)

Dear NHUSD Families,

If you happen to drive by Cesar Chavez Middle School, you’ll see that the turf is almost completely installed on its new field. It won’t be long before our students and the community (after school hours) can enjoy the wonderful new upgrades to that facility.

Also related to Cesar Chavez is a reminder that the renaming process is underway. We currently have a survey for members of the NHUSD community to fill out if you're interested in suggesting a name or joining the Facilities Names Committee. You can access that survey here: [Renaming Survey].

Science in the Park returns this year at CSUEB on October 3. Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Marquez is presenting this event. While this is not an NHUSD-affiliated or sponsored event, we support Ms. Marquez’s efforts to bring it back for our families. Her office is trying to determine whether or not there is interest in free transportation from our community to and from the event. If you are interested, you can complete the following form: Transportation Form. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeqL1w1Vxm7UOfKVX_vEc6Oy1BvxPB0XQ9QURTcsNhEvXFMew/viewform
You can learn more about the event using this link: Science in the Park. https://www.acscienceinthepark.org/

Congratulations to our Latino Parent Advisory Group for a fantastic presentation on August 25 in collaboration with Canada College. Over 100 community members came out to learn about financial aid for college. You can access the FAFSA recording link here.

Our parent groups are wonderful places to learn and become a part of our New Haven Family Community.

A few upcoming parent meetings:

Sept 14- District African American Advisory group (D3A)

Sept 22- Latino Parent Advisory group

Sept 27- Punjabi Parent Advisory group Picnic.

Please look for more information to join these meetings in upcoming notifications.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D.

Congratulations to Alvarado Elementary School teacher Maureen Tecson on being one of the 2026 Follow Your Bliss Award Winners 📚 from the 49ers Foundation and representing New Haven Unified School District and our community!

Meet Maureen Tecson at Alvarado Elementary!

Maureen believes a teacher can only inspire and educate when their students feel loved and cared for. With over 30 years of experience, Maureen starts every morning with her students saying "Hello" or "Good Morning" in different languages. Maureen also leads one of California's first Social Justice Academies at the Elementary school level. To win this award, Maureen hopes to shine a light on the positive impact Social Justice Academy can have on her community, the children and families.
