Member Spotlight: Kevin Stevens

The biggest value of a student organization is what you build from it and how you use the resources available to you.

For Kevin Stevens, his SCLA experience has meant expanding his professional network, developing career-ready skills, and having access to resources that have strengthened his career portfolio. SCLA's UCF Chapter showed up in a big way at the Student Organizations Fair! 🎓

Chapter representative Yesse Ordonez spent the day connecting with future Knights, sharing what SCLA offers, and raising the chapter's visibility across campus. A swag raffle capped off the event — with two lucky winners walking away with prizes! 🎉

The presence paid off immediately: an incoming UCF transfer student followed up by email afterward to learn more about joining.

College is the time to start building the skills you'll rely on after graduation.

For many students, the transition from college to a career can feel like a big leap.
For Ronin Corinne, one of the things that stood out about SCLA was its focus on helping students prepare for that transition before graduation.

"What impressed me most about SCLA is how focused the organization is on helping students transition from campus to career."

Ronin also highlighted the practical nature of the leadership certification and professional development resources, as they are skills that can be applied beyond the classroom.

Networking is easier when you know what to say.

Reaching out to someone you don't know can feel awkward, especially when you're a student or just starting your career.

That's why SCLA members have access to Networking Outreach Templates designed to make those first conversations a little easier.

The resource gives you practical starting points for different stages of building a professional relationship, from making an introduction to following up after a conversation.

You should still bring your own voice and personality, but the templates help you get started.

How can you stand out in this changing job market? As new technologies emerge and industries evolve, the skills employers value continue to shift.

The choices you make outside the classroom can matter almost as much as the degree, and the students who stand out are the ones who keep learning.
In SCLA's CEO Unscripted Speaker Series, Michael Johnson shared this advice for students:

"Differentiate yourself. Lean into what's coming and look at it as an opportunity to grow."

Take a new course or learn a new skill. Saying yes to opportunities that challenge you will keep you a strong candidate in the job market. Growth is what sets you apart.

No one likes hearing "no.” Regardless of whether it’s an internship, a job application, or an opportunity you were hoping for, rejection can be discouraging.

But in SCLA's CEO Unscripted Speaker Series, Lauren Imparato offers a different way to look at it, saying that:

"Success often takes a lot of rejection and a lot of losing. If you're worried about what all people are thinking about you all the time, it's going to be harder to bounce back up."

The most successful people are those who didn't let rejection stop them. They don’t dwell on the negative opinions of others or spend too much time focusing on what others think.

Every "no" is a chance to learn, improve, and keep moving forward.

Don't let one setback convince you to give up on a goal that still matters.
