Hebrews 12:1 says Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us...
Our Chapel speaker, Pastor Ashley McDonald from Access Church, broke this verse down for us today with some engaging object lessons around the things that hinder us and weigh us down and well as the sinful things that entangle us.
We're told to preparing for race day which means that we want to be as "light" as possible, and not be weighed down by anything. We have to understand that some things are not inherently bad or sinful - like video games, social media, extra curricular activities, phones, entertainment, or caring about the opinions of others - but they can still hinder us from better pursuits that God has for us.
Other things, are inherently sinful, which means they will only ever pull us away from what God has for us. Name calling, pride, gossip, disobeying parents, and unforgiveness were all named as examples that we might face in this category.
Not everyone runs the same race, but all of us will face things that fit in both of these categories. When we realize it, we have to ask for His forgiveness, and pray for continued motivation to put God first.
Pastor Ashley challenged us to analyze what's in their "backpack" that may be hindering them from pursuing God completely, and asked them to analyze what's in their "heart" to see if there is anything that needs to be removed.
Thank you Pastor Ashley for such a relevant word!
