Feeling a little nostalgic. I remember the first time I walked into Scuba Steve's Dive Shop with a bundle of gear that had belonged to a friend who passed away and a whole lot of questions. I was greeted by Gary Stephen Peacock in the friendliest manner possible, which was a stark contrast to the first dive shop i visited where they tried to get me to donate the older equipment as "museum pieces" and pretty much had a crappy attitude all together. I had always wanted to learn to scuba dive, but had always assumed the price was out of a middle class guys ability to meet without skipping a lot of meals (which my pudgy self should probably do anyways). Gary answered my questions and let me know that scuba was actually affordable for the average Joe. Within a few days I had signed up myself and my oldest daughter for Open Water class.
I never could have imagined how scuba would change my life. I went from working 7 days a week to I'm diving at least 1 day a week, then 2, then i want to keep training. Just a handful of years later I am diving multiple times a week teaching new divers or honing my own skills in technical diving. I have my own dive shop in Tyler Tx right next door to where I became a diver. I hope that everyone who walks through my door feels the same warmth and excitement for scuba that I did when I walked through the door of Scuba Steve's not that long ago.
