We want to recognize Michel Alfaro, a proud member of the Tyler Junior College Class of 2014, who studied Photography at TJC and has served as one of the college’s sports photographers since Spring 2021.
Through the years, Michel has captured countless moments across TJC athletics, turning his passion for sports photography into an incredible professional opportunity on one of the world’s biggest stages.
For the next month, Michel will be photographing the FIFA World Cup as part of the media team for the Tyler Morning Telegraph — an extraordinary accomplishment for a TJC alumnus and East Texas photographer. 🌎⚽
From the sidelines at TJC to the world’s largest sporting event, Michel’s journey is a powerful example of where talent, dedication, and hard work can lead.

Felipe Hernandez Jr.’s story is one rooted in music, mentorship, and community. While attending Tyler Junior College, Felipe not only pursued his passion for music education, but also met his wife, Alejandra—making TJC an important part of both his professional and personal journey. Today, he serves as a 7th Grade Band Director at Hudson ISD, where he is dedicated to helping young musicians grow in both skill and confidence.
Known for his enthusiasm and commitment to student success, Felipe has built a reputation as a passionate educator who invests deeply in his students and school community. Whether leading performances, supporting band programs across East Texas, or encouraging the next generation of musicians, he continues to make a meaningful impact through education and the arts. His journey reflects the lifelong connections and opportunities that begin at TJC.

Terry shares his journey from the classrooms of TJC to the fast-paced world of Viacom/MTV Networks, where he led experiential design and public relations for major brands. He later served as a New York State Senator, championing environmental protection and community development, and now teaches Public Speaking and Strategic Communication at Harvard University. From leading the Tyler Junior College Apache Marching Band on the marching field to inspiring students in the band hall, Marli Dority continues to make a lasting impact through music education and leadership. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of both Tyler Junior College and Texas A&M University-Commerce, she served as Drum Major of the nationally recognized Apache Marching Band during the 2019 season, embodying the pride, tradition, and excellence of the TJC experience.
Now in her first year as Associate Band Director at Davenport High School and in her third year of teaching, Marli is dedicated to mentoring young musicians and fostering meaningful connections through music. She began her teaching career at Melissa ISD, where the marching and concert band programs consistently earned sweepstakes awards and advanced to multiple area competitions. In addition to teaching, she also contributes her time supporting the UIL State Marching Contest for high school bands.
Marli’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, leadership, and service. We are proud to celebrate her accomplishments and the positive impact she continues to make in the lives of young musicians every day.

A Tyler native, Dr. Dennis specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic knee surgery, with advanced fellowship training completed in Sydney, Australia. He works with everyone from student athletes to weekend warriors, focusing on recovery, rehabilitation, and getting patients back in the game as quickly and safely as possible.
Recognized as one of East Texas’ leading orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Dennis has earned honors including Tyler Morning Telegraph’s “Best in Town,” Texas Monthly Super Doctors recognition, and Newsweek’s America’s Leading Doctors list. Through his work at Azalea Orthopedics and Baylor Scott & White Texas Spine & Joint Hospital, he continues to make a lasting impact on the East Texas community.
