The Southern Idaho Horticulture Extension program is committed to helping individuals and communities grow. We provide volunteer programs for adults and youth, specialized training in sustainable landscaping, home and garden vegetable production, pest management, small acerage management, and water conservation. Master Gardeners, University of Idaho trained volunteers provide no-cost horticulture education to hundreds of Southern Idaho residents through our plant clinics and information booths.

It is that time of year to watch your plants for squash bugs. Look for adults around the base of the plants and eggs laid in the crotches of the veins on the undersides of the leaves. If egg masses are found you can use duct tape to pull them off and discard them. Adults are hard-bodied so using two hard surfaces to smash them is effective. Daily or every other day checking the plants will help keep the population in check. I have yet to find eggs on my plants but have killed 5 adults in the last few days.

January 27 is National Seed Swap Day. The Twin Falls Public Library😀 in cooperation with the Magic Valley Master Gardeners is hosting a local seed swap on January 27, 2024, from 11 am to 2 pm. You will find packets of vegetable and flower seeds saved by local gardeners plus some samples from Seed Savers Exchange. If you have seed to share you are welcome to bring it. We will have information on gardening from the local Extension Office and Snake River Seed Cooperative, as well as seed saving techniques and lists of websites with additional gardening information. Seed catalogs from a couple of seed companies will be available.

I plan to make it specific to the time of year that it would be beneficial information. I will covers weeds as they emerge, when to plant, when to prune, harvest, and many other topics.
