My blood pressure has been a problem in my past but as of now, it's no longer a concern that I carry with me on a daily basis. The knowledge of macros and nutrition has been the key to my success! We are so DANG proud of Jeff and so happy that he was encouraged to coach with us. Jeff's employer sponsored his initial coaching with Synergy Wellness and this generous gift was just what he needed to push him to make his health a priority. Jeff has blown past his initial weight loss goal and continues to impressed us all. His doctor was equally impressed and is so happy for Jeff...and has now eliminated ALL blood pressure medication from Jeff's treatment plan! This is what it's all about! It's so much more than weight loss, people! Weight loss is just the side effect of proper nutrition!!! Decreasing Jeff's blood pressure will essentially add quality and quantity to his life. Period.

I just LOVE this quick, superfood, side dish! It’s easy to make and something you can customize so that the whole family loves it. Notice in the picture- at the top of the post- that the avocado is in a separate bowl. That is because my bonus-baby doesn’t love them. :^) This salad can be served like a salad bar to ensure your whole family will be happy. Have an item that is not appealing to everyone? Separate it out so that it can be avoided! Don’t like something in this recipe? Swap it out! You can add any veggies you like. Try it with olives. Add some sunflower or h**p seeds. Even add some spice!

When I make this, I cook my quinoa in the pressure cooker and then chill it. I’m sure you could have warm quinoa in this, but I like it all cold. I don’t mix the veggies and dressing in with the quinoa so that I can vary the ratio of quinoa to veggies from person to person. My kids like more quinoa, and I like more veggies, so I don’t mix them and everyone can mix it to their liking. This also ensures that leftovers can be used in a more versatile way…and without the quinoa getting soggy! By dishing out the veggies and quinoa on each plate, this changes the macros and servings this recipe will create, which is why I didn’t list it in the post. :^) For reference, though, this much usually feeds my blended family of 5 with a little plain quinoa left over!

I served this dish with grilled chicken, and it was a HIT.

Do you know why we observe Labor Day and many of us enjoy a refreshing day off work? Here's what we learned:
-
According to the Department of Labor, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

In 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes" to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

Since then...for almost 130 years, most of us have enjoyed a day off from work, even if we weren't sure why. :^) This extensive time lapse explains why most Americans don't remember this Holiday's origination. :^)

Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades, picnics and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday.

Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Why should we care? Well...American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

Many of our clients know what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle, they just need someone to keep them accountable! Many of them know what they are doing that is keeping them from reaching their goals. They know which habits are detrimental and which ones they need more of. They aren't new to the wellness game and often times are already active. They could sit down and write out extensive lists of things they could do to improve their health. So why do these people still hire us?

Now…many of our clients have goals and needs that require more than the minimum recommended values of protein, so this calculation isn’t the full story. We just see extreme over-consumption so often and had to say something! Too many people are just cramming protein into their diets because they think they “need” it, causing side effects that are unpleasant, undesirable, and even unhealthy! Dive into the research and stay informed!

Ummm, hold on a sec!!!! Regardless of the genetic code that we are handed, we can adopt better habits. We can treat ourselves more kindly. We can nourish our bodies more intentionally. Every small improvement leads to change. While there are many factors that are handed down from our biological predecessors...and new characteristics or medical conditions can come with our own personal recombination of DNA...there is always room for taking great care of our bodies.

Stay curious. Try new things. Listen to your body, be mindful and your body will reward you with a renewed, vibrant energy.
