Friends of Sage Hill, We are BACK.
But different...

We have an amazing location and a beautiful group of engaged parents and kids, but we're in need of a teacher who is brave enough to pioneer a new way of guiding children K - 2 grade in a micro-school format.

If this is you or someone you know... please visit our website or reach out for application details. We're planning on 16 students with two teachers or one teacher, but a smaller class.

Parents will be very involved. If you love play as learning, using nature and projects to guide and allowing inquiry and curiosity to lead the way -- this may be a good fit for you.

The parents of Sage Hill Microschool are seeking a teacher who is willing to open and help develop a new microschool. Sage Hill Microschool is nature-based, inquiry-based, and place-based. We are seeking a teacher who understands and believes in these practices for young children.

This coming academic year, our school will be serving children ages five to eight. One teacher will teach eight children (two teachers would work with 16 children). Families will be involved in the classroom to varying capacities. The parents are seeking a teacher who shares these core beliefs and is willing to work with parents and families to bring this model to life.

We are looking for someone who is willing to attend trainings and be mentored by others as the teacher and children continue to grow and develop. We are seeking someone who is passionate about teaching children in nature and within children’s interests.

SCHOOL UPDATE:

Unfortunately, the building we were planning on for the fall doesn't meet the new fire codes for Twin Falls. We will not be opening for Fall 2021. We love the excitement you've all shared with us and are deeply disappointed to bring this news to you.

Creating a school without state funding is a challenging journey, and we have not been able to find a suitable location to open our doors in the fall.

If you have connections to a location that would serve 20 to 40 children, or if you are passionate about offering an amazing education opportunity to this area and would like to become a founding donor, we'd love to connect with you.

Sage Hill is based on the ethics and design principles of Permaculture. The philosophy of permaculture is one of working with rather than against nature, of looking at systems in all their functions, rather than asking only one yield of them, and of allowing systems to demonstrate their own evolutions (Bill Mollison, Permaculture – A Designers Manual 1988).

Sage Hill is a private school model, operating independent of state or federal standards, curricula and testing. This allows for a curriculum guided by journeys, quests and learning pathways with portfolio-based assessment and accomplishments awarded for meeting objectives (no grades).

This also allows our model to be flexible and scalable according to student and family needs in our community.

We know the traditional way of teaching doesn't work for every child, which is why we're creating a nature and inquiry-based school to encourage children to follow their passions and curiosity.

Project-based curriculum encourages children to be active participants in the learning process and to develop the skills needed to explore their ideas, interests, and questions in a meaningful way.

We believe that education should be heavily structured around nature, meaning our school will partner with and eventually be located on a working micro-farm and permaculture garden. It is our experience that any transformative movement in education, both primary and secondary, must include outdoor learning experiences.

We believe in the vision of education held and promoted by the late Ken Robinson (2020). A blog memorializing his work stated: “He was critical of contemporary educational systems, which he believed educated students to become good workers, rather than creative thinkers. He advocated instead for a personal approach, one that treats kids as unique individuals with a diversity of talents.

“We have to move to a model that is based more on principles of agriculture,” he said in the follow-up to his 2006 talk. “We have to recognize that human flourishing is not a mechanical process; it’s an organic process. And you cannot predict the outcome of human development. All you can do, like a farmer, is create the conditions under which they will begin to flourish.”

At Sage Hill, we hope to create the conditions for an environment where students can flourish organically. Traditional public school manages a very difficult work load of students in full classrooms. To handle this work, public school seeks to group students strictly by age and subject level. Students are led through one subject at a time at the same pace to help with organization and the teacher’s work load.

At Sage Hill, we can allow for more individual student time for learning and being guided by a facilitator by keeping class sizes under 20 students and including volunteers, assistants and mentors.
