Thanks to all the participants that helped make Day 1 of the Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) 2026 One Health Symposium & Phi Zeta Research Day a success on Sept. 14th, which highlighted the 27th Annual One Health Symposium.

Dean Ebony Gilbreath notes that this year’s theme, “Advancing One Health Through Technology,” highlights the increasingly important role of technology and innovation in strengthening our ability to prevent disease, improve health outcomes, protect our environment, and respond to emerging health threats. The annual symposium reflects our College's commitment to advancing biomedical research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and preparing future professionals to address evolving global health challenges. It brings together distinguished speakers, faculty, students, researchers, community representatives, and other participants representing a variety of disciplines to share knowledge, discoveries, and innovative approaches.

Special thank you to the Honorable Frank Chris Lee, Mayor of Tuskegee, for bringing greetings on yesterday as well as the many speakers that presented on a variety of topics centering around our theme. A special thank you to our keynote speaker, Dr. David Hodge, who presented on “The Algorithmic Belmont Problem: From Human Subjects to Human Beings in the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.” The co-chairs for the 27th Annual One Health Symposium, Dr. Asseged Dibaba and Dr. David A. Hodge, Sr., also thanks all participants on yesterday. Dr. Dibaba is an Associate Professor in the Department of Graduate Public Health (TUCVM) and Dr. Hodge is the Interim Director, National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care (Tuskegee University).

The Tuskegee University College of Veterunary Medicine (TUCVM) sends our condolences to the family of the late Dr. George Reese. Dr. George Reese transitioned on September 7, 2026. Please keep the family of Dr. Reese in your thoughts and prayers.

Dr. George Reese was a Tuskegee veterinary alumnus and a retired large animal veterinarian with a focus on swine medicine. Dr. Reese gave many years of dedicated service on faculty at Tuskegee University and was appreciated by many students for the knowledge he poured in them as a swine ("porcine") medicine specialist and professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences.

Dr. Reese's final arrangements are through McKenzie's Funeral Home, located at 1509 Notasulga Rd P.O. Box 830088, Tuskegee, AL 36083. His funeral service has not yet been disclosed at this time but will be shared once available.

The Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) family joins in remebering the victims, first-responders and their families of Sept. 11, 2001! We also salute the efforts of our dedicated TUCVM alumni that also served as first-responders during this devastating time in our nation.

Tuskegee Veterinarian, Dr. Michael Shorter Class of 1978, was on site providing care to the rescue dogs which later created several new dog rescue programs in NYC. His story was featured at links below:

The Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) sends our condolences to the family of the late Dr. Robert (Bobby) Horne. Dr. Horne gave many years of devoted service as a faculty member and Department Head at TUCVM.

We are saddened by the loss of former CVM faculty member Dr. Robert Dean "Bobby" Horne `59, who passed away on Aug. 31. He was 91 years old.

Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 14, from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home in Opelika followed by a Chapel Service at 2:30 p.m.

Dr. Horne earned his veterinary degree from Auburn Vet Med and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) in 1969. He served as a professor in the college's Department of Small Animal Surgery and Medicine from 1971 to 1995 and as chief of the Surgery Section from 1965 to 1980.

In 1995, Dr. Horne joined the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine faculty, serving as head of the Department of Clinical Sciences. He was a longtime member of the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and earned the organization's Distinguished Service Award in 2003.

The Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) family congratulates our 1999 alum, Dr. Rennia Wint, who was recently featured on ATL Live TV!

Dr. Wint had a guest appearance on ATL Live TV show in Atlanta, GA. & was featured on the August 31st segment as the month closed out for National Dog Month. She spoke on the TV segment about some of the myths about heartworm disease and the importance of prevention for pets. Dr. Wint is a 1999 veterinary medicine graduate of Tuskegee University. She has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years and always knew that she wanted to be a veterinarian and own her very own veterinary practice. First starting as a Lead Veterinarian, Dr. Wint has since taken on the role of a multi-unit manager, overseeing and supporting numerous veterinary practices across the state of Georgia.

Her passion for veterinary medicine was kindled as a child while growing up in Jamaica, helping out on a family friend’s farm after school and as she grew up working with veterinarians. Attending the then-named College of Agriculture (now CASE) sealed it for Dr. Wint as she pursued her Associate’s degree.

She was able to use skills learned while completing double major Bachelor’s degrees in Business and Animal Science. Dr. Wint was also able to pursue one of her passions: developing the skills of both doctors and support staff.

Tuskegee University, College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) held an awesome SAVMA TUCVM Club Fair today, Aug. 27th from 12:00-I:00 PM in the Patterson Hall Atrium in which TUCVM students interested in getting involved on campus were encouraged to come out to the TUCVM Club Fair to learn more about the clubs and organizations available to them!

Students stopped by to meet club representatives & learn more about what each club and organization offered to find an organization that matched their interests. Thanks to all the participants! 😊
