✈️ INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: ELI SCREWS ✈️

East Aviation is proud to recognize Eli Screws and celebrate the newest milestone in his aviation journey—earning his Certificated Flight Instructor–Instrument (CFII) rating!

A native of North Alabama, Eli is an Aerospace Engineer whose career has focused on modernizing the Army’s helicopter fleet. His experience includes Army aviation, aircraft airworthiness, and project management. That strong technical background gives Eli an exceptional understanding of the systems, principles, organization, and precision that safe flying demands.

Eli’s passion for aviation began at an early age. His grandfather, a commercial pilot and crop duster, introduced him to airplanes and inspired a lifelong love of flying. Eli earned his Private Pilot Certificate in 2002 and has been hooked ever since.

Today, Eli instructs at Guntersville Airport, where students appreciate his patient, thorough teaching style and careful attention to detail. His experience includes single-engine land, complex, high-performance, and tailwheel airplanes, as well as specialized Mooney transition training. With the addition of his CFII rating, Eli can now help students pursue their instrument ratings and develop the knowledge, precision, and decision-making skills needed for instrument flying.

Whether you are beginning your aviation journey, completing a certificate or rating, transitioning into a different aircraft, or working to stay proficient and current, Eli is ready to help you reach your goals.

We are fortunate to have Eli on the East Aviation instructor team. His technical expertise, thoughtful mentorship, and steady professionalism reflect our mission to pay it forward and develop the next generation of confident, capable aviators.

✈️ Instructor Spotlight: Sophie Rogers - Every Pilot Has a Beginning

Every pilot has a story. This is one of the reasons East Aviation exists—to help others discover the same passion for flying that has changed so many lives. Today we are shining the spotlight on Sophie Rogers. Take a moment and read about her in her own words.

Becoming a pilot wasn’t anything I ever dreamed about or aspired to be growing up. One day, as my father and I watched a small aircraft flying above us coming in to land, my father said, “Wouldn’t it be great to be flying that little airplane?” I had never given that idea any thought and all of a sudden, at that very moment, a seed was planted. I lived right next to an airport and signed up for flight lessons that week.

My very first flight in a small aircraft was in 1999 and went above and beyond anything I had ever imagined. From that moment forward I was completely swept off my feet. I went from getting my Private Pilot license, to acquiring an Instrument Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Commercial and Flight Instructor certificates, and finally an Airline Transport Pilot certificate. I just kept right on moving forward because I loved the training and learning process. Becoming a Flight Instructor gave me the opportunity to share that same passion by teaching others to fly.

Over the years I've logged more than 10,000 hours of flight time. I've been blessed with many incredible opportunities, my favorite being flying a 10-seat business jet since 2004. That experience immersed me in a fast-paced, highly professional aviation environment, and I'm grateful every day for the opportunity to bring those lessons and experiences back to my students.

Although my father has passed away, I think about him often every time I step into an airplane. I'll never forget the smile on his face when I took him flying for the first time after earning my Private Pilot Certificate. That simple conversation years ago changed the course of my life forever.

Sometimes all it takes is one conversation... one lesson... one flight.
