Congratulations to Dr. Constance Pewee-Childs on her appointment as interim principal of Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools - Elementary!

Already serving as principal of Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools–Middle, Dr. Pewee-Childs will expand her leadership role while continuing to guide a school recognized as both a State and National School of Character. With previous experience as the school counselor for both magnet schools, she brings a deep understanding of the students, staff, and families she serves.

"My goal is to continue building on the strong foundation already established, cultivate meaningful relationships, and work alongside our students, staff, and families to ensure every child experiences a seamless journey of excellence from elementary through middle school," said Dr. Pewee-Childs.

Hi! My name is Dr. Kristy Smith, and I am excited to be joining TMSE as our Math Coach!

I have had a wonderful career so far including twelve years as a Secondary Instructional Partner and Digital Learning Coach, fifteen years teaching third and fourth graders, and one year as a Math Coach. I am a National Board Certified Teacher, hold a Technology Integration Certification, and teach Mathematics Curriculum as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama. I love sharing my knowledge and learning at conferences and running my own edtech consulting business.

My husband, Luke, and I have two grown children, a teenager, and three adorable dogs who keep us on our toes and bring us joy. When I have free time I enjoy cooking, baking, cruising, and travel planning.

I am really excited to bring my love for math and technology together at TMSE this year, making math even more enjoyable for both teachers and students!

Hello! My name is Kate Lay and I will be your new art teacher this year!

I have a B.A. in Art Education from the University of Florida 🐊 and I have been teaching art in TCS for the last 8 years. I have been teaching elementary students for the past 4 years ar Rock Quarry, Oakdale, and Skyland. I love teaching students how to create, perfect their visions, and learn how to make lots of mistakes but overcome them.

I also love music and theatre. When I am not teaching, you might find me in a rehearsal getting ready for a show with The Actor’s Charitable Theatre where I help produce musicals and plays using both my artistic skills and my musical ones by teaching the music or playing the violin in the pit.

I have a husband named Joey, a perfect bonus daughter who is starting 6th grade this year, and 3 dogs. I look forward to joining the Magnet elementary family and helping our students grow!
