Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines

* Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines.
* Inspired by the past and dedicated to the future, the Society’s mission is to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning.
* The three Greek words appearing on our crest form the motto of the organization: "Knowledge is Power."
* Those elected to membership include those who have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of any first year, full-time curricular period, provided they have carried a normal academic load acceptable toward a bachelor’s degree and rank in the upper 20 percent of their class.
* Since its founding, more than 1,100,000 scholars have been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma.
* Phi Eta Sigma chapters are chartered on 365 campuses across the United States.
* Hundreds of college and university faculty and staff volunteers share their time to serve as advisers to local chapters.
* Approximately $285,000 in scholarships is awarded annually by the national organization, and many additional thousands are awarded by local chapters.
* An important strength of Phi Eta Sigma is its form of government. It is governed by a Constitution and Laws generated by student delegates attending national conventions. At the biennial conventions, student delegates also elect the national officers and Executive Committee members.
* Phi Eta Sigma conducts a biennial national convention with attendee expenses, excluding transportation, paid by the national office for a chapter adviser and student delegate from each chapter.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Peter Remala
We’re kicking off our newly refreshed Student Spotlight series with Peter Remala, a junior at Indiana University Indianapolis studying Biology on the Pre-Medicine track!

After previously serving as his chapter’s Vice President, Peter continues to stay involved by volunteering at events and supporting the chapter’s new leadership. His experience at the 2025 Phi Eta Sigma National Convention showed him the value of learning from different perspectives and approaches to leadership.

🔬 Right now, Peter is putting that growth into action as a manager and researcher in Dr. Sandusky’s Pathology Lab at the IU School of Medicine, where he’s working to complete a major research paper.

💛 His advice to new members? Never be afraid to sign yourself up for opportunities. No opportunity is too big or too difficult, and learning comes with time.

And when it comes to surviving college?
Coffee? Nope.
Energy drinks? Nope.
“No caffeine, just passion.”

We think that’s a pretty great way to start a new chapter of Student Spotlights. 📖✨

This year, we’re turning the page on new opportunities to serve, connect, and make an impact through literacy. From supporting local libraries and schools to book drives, reading programs, and more, every chapter has a role to play in helping others discover where reading can take them.

Twenty-three undergraduate Phi Eta Sigma members who are ready to grow, contribute, connect, and discover what they're capable of.

Selection for The XXIII isn't simply about having the longest résumé. The national review process will consider academic achievement, leadership potential, engagement, and what each applicant can both contribute to and gain from the experience.

Designed for students ready to challenge themselves, strengthen their leadership, and think intentionally about life beyond college, this is an opportunity unlike anything Phi Eta Sigma has offered before.

And because selected Fellows receive scholarship support from Phi Eta Sigma National Headquarters, there is no cost to participate.
