From looking at small slides to seeing the big picture, microbiology junior Izzy Franchione addresses maternity care deserts in West Alabama through her research with the UAB Heersink School of Medicine.

Supported by an ASSURE grant, Franchione began working with Dr. Holly Horan in the Department of OBGYN after hearing her speak during a McCollough Scholars Program class.

“One of the things that Dr. Horan talked about in her presentation was how so many women, especially in West Alabama, have to travel over 30 miles to receive care,” Franchione said. “That really opened my eyes, and I have a personal connection thinking about if my mom was in that scenario, so just from there, I feel like it really resonated with me, even though it’s beyond what I study on a typical day-to-day basis.”

LC Lang, a senior majoring in dance and accounting, spends her out-of-classroom time at The University of Alabama surrounded by dancers, engaging with the dance community and spending countless hours preparing for dance shows.

She used these on-campus experiences to earn an arts administration internship for New York City’s Ailey Extension, which brings dance to ordinary people.

“I had a lot of background that I created for myself and experiences I created at UA that helped me get ready for that [the internship],” Lang said. “It has just been a great experience to make my own path. When people ask me what I like about UA, that’s the main thing, I was able to make my path.”

Every year, students in the Honors College’s Dr. Robert E. Witt University Fellows Program create service projects for the community of Marion, Alabama. For sophomore chemistry majors Isabelle Brooks, Emily Rodenberg and Landry Clark, that meant bringing a mobile dental van and health fair to the town.

“We had to figure out how to feasibly create a dental office inside of a parking lot,” Rodenberg said.

To fundraise, Rodenberg, Clark and Brooks delivered handwritten letters to dental care and dental adjacent businesses in Tuscaloosa and Northport. They walked into countless dental practices to share their mission and ask for support. Within a week, they met their fundraising goals, enabling them to book the van, plan a health fair and bring dental care to Marion.

Department of Physics & Astronomy assistant professor Dr. Ryan Wang’s work on the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment has recorded a single particle interaction, LZ20230616, that is not readily explained by known backgrounds. The LZ experiment is an international collaboration that is led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and operates nearly one mile below ground at Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota.

Wang leads the UA group who works on the LZ experiment, which involves understanding detector backgrounds, calibration and veto performance.

“Our work helps LZ distinguish ordinary signals from events that could potentially be dark matter,” Wang said. “In this analysis, the Bristol and UA teams co-led this effort and identified an event that does not appear consistent with any known background, which is very exciting.”

After building a small-scale wetland replica in her apartment, high school student Saisha Sahoo contacted BCAS faculty Dr. Natasha Dimova about expanding her research.

“I was absolutely stunned,” Dimova said. “First, that she had informed opinions about the ecological issues we tackled in our recent publication, and secondly that she had already completed an impressive research project almost entirely on her own.”

Sahoo went on to win awards at local and international science fairs while also gaining a firsthand look at collegiate research.

Dimova said the work is a powerful example of how UA research extends beyond campus and supports young scientists.

This summer Dr. Safa Elnaili, an associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages & Classics, spent two weeks in Malaysia and Vietnam teaching, researching and exploring the intersection of fairytales, art and multiculturalism.

She examines the human side of monsters, ghouls and creatures from cultures across the globe and then combines literature, digital art and language learning by having artists depict these monsters and their humanity in art pieces.

"My work uses stories and folktales to reveal the common threads that bind us together," Elnaili said. "I'm trying to bring out the humanity, the shared humanity between us, especially monsters, because you wouldn't look at humanity in monsters, but that's a concept that I'm very interested in."
