Celebrating 2026 C&IS Hall of Fame inductee Thomas V. Scarritt.

Scarritt joined The Birmingham News in 1975 and worked at the paper for nearly four decades, rising to the role of editor. Under his leadership, the newspaper earned two Pulitzer Prizes and national recognition. A journalism graduate of UNC and MBA from Samford, he has been widely honored for civic and professional service.

Dr. Heather Ashley Hayes has been named associate dean for graduate studies at C&IS, bringing her experience as an interdisciplinary scholar, educator and mentor to the College’s graduate programs.

In her new role, Hayes will work across C&IS to strengthen the graduate student experience and help shape the future of the College’s programs, collaborating with students, faculty and academic leaders.

“Home to more than a thousand graduate students across seven degrees, C&IS is one of the largest and most dynamic graduate communities on campus. I’m most excited to tell that story and to build what comes next,” Hayes said. “We have extraordinary faculty and a nationally recognized doctoral program, and our students are purpose-driven. They are turning discovery into innovation that speaks to pressing societal challenges across Alabama and beyond.”

Meet 2026 C&IS Hall of Fame inductee Stephen Bradley.

Bradley began his journalism career on the night shift at the Florence Times and later served as a Navy journalist in Vietnam.

A University of Alabama graduate, he led crisis communications at Alabama Power and helped resolve the 1990 Shoal Creek controversy, elevating public relations as a strategic leadership function statewide.

The Alabama Broadcasters Association brought its 80th Anniversary Tour to Tuscaloosa with a stop at the University Club! 🎙️

The reception gathered broadcasters and community leaders to recognize 80 years of local radio and television in Alabama.

C&IS was glad to join the celebration alongside ABA Executive Director, C&IS alum and Board of Visitors member Sharon Tinsley.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life, libraries could play an important role in helping communities understand how it works, how it can be used and the ethical questions it raises.

Dr. Yuan Li, Dr. Bharat Mehra and Dr. Jack Lipei Tang have received a $199,994 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to explore how libraries can strengthen public understanding of artificial intelligence.
