The Museum of Natural History had their fossil fest last weekend. Our department sponsored a couple of tables. Thanks to Professors Fred, Tom and Alberto and Graduate Students Issac, Anna-Cae, Mica and Gozde. Looks like everyone had fun!

Our department combined with Auburn's Department of Geosciences now have an Alabama Student Chapter of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA), which is offically recognized by the SGA.

Students from both UA-DGS and Auburn-DGS are members. Owen Meeks is the UA representative and Caroline Locker is the Auburn representative. Contact Nic Saintilan for more information.

Their first activity is hosting Mike Lesher in Tuscaloosa in November. The Auburn group will travel up for the workshop.

Edit: Now looks like from a failure from a large glacier and surrounding rock. I'm not sure there was ever a dam although it is curious where the volume of water came from.
A landslide along the Nepal/Tibet border today caused a dam of glacier and boulders. This dam was broken through causing sudden and catastrophic flood along the Trishuli River in Nepal. The news agencies are showing videos that illustrate the devastating power of flowing water. This highlights the need for a monitoring system that will warn villages downstream. Many villages were entirely centered on the river and no longer exist. Infrastructure will take years to build again. Our thoughts are with those who lost family in this event.

Congrats to Isuru Silvia for earning 2nd Place in the Student Poster Competition at AbSciCon 2026, the biennial Astrobiology Science Conference that brings together the international astrobiology community,

Isuru states the following:
My poster focused on green algae from cave environments that can grow under far-red light at extremely low photon flux, and how these systems may help us think about oxygen-producing photosynthesis under weak, red-shifted light conditions relevant to planets orbiting M-dwarf stars. I’m incredibly grateful to my advisor, Dr. Hazel Barton, for her guidance, support, and encouragement throughout this work. I’m also thankful to my lab members, Mr. Chinmalay, collaborators, and everyone who helped me shape this project and communicate the story clearly. A big thank you to the AbSciCon organizers, judges, and the broader astrobiology community for this recognition and for such an inspiring conference. I left AbSciCon feeling deeply encouraged, grateful, and excited for the next steps in this project.
