We provide elementary and middle school educators with practical training and resources to help create safe and joyful classrooms and schools where children can thrive. We believe all spaces, not just classrooms and schools, should be safe, joyful, and engaging. With that in mind, we ask that all comments, posts, and shares be kind and respectful. One of our favorite Responsive Classroom practices begins with a simple question: "What are your hopes and dreams for this year?"

Creating space for these conversations helps students build a sense of purpose from day one while reinforcing that their ideas matter, their voices are valued, and they have an important role in shaping the classroom community.

Here are a few ideas for making these conversations meaningful:

⭐️ Encourage goals that are personal, realistic, and meaningful to each student

Learning a student's name is one of the first ways we communicate, "You belong here."

Taking the time to learn and use students' names does more than help everyone get acquainted. It helps build relationships, creates a sense of belonging, and sets the tone for a classroom where every student feels seen and valued from day one.

And, don’t forget, helping students learn the names of the adults around them can have a similar impact, making it easier for them to build connections and know who they can turn to for support!

🌟 Back-to-school tip: Assume nothing. Teach everything.

Every classroom, at every grade level, has its own routines, expectations, and ways of doing things.Taking the time to teach them explicitly helps every student feel confident, successful, and included from the very beginning.

That might mean modeling how to join a discussion, ask for help, transition between activities, work with a partner, or what to do when they need to leave the classroom. No expectation is too small to teach.
