Please see this message that went to families this afternoon:
MSAD 52 Families and Staff:
Since the beginning of the school year, our schools have had numerous incidents involving a variety of E-bikes on school grounds. On the Turner campuses in particular, we have received multiple reports by teachers, administrators, parents, community members and law enforcement of dangerous riding and near-miss accidents related to E-bike use. We have been growing increasingly concerned for the safety and well being of our students and those who are sharing our roads and parking lots.
As a result of these reports and concerns, we have made the decision to ban all E-bikes from MSAD 52 property effective immediately. Given the volume of reports and complaints, we must act immediately to prevent a serious accident from happening.
We support students being active and outside. We support the use of regular, human powered, bicycles and will continue to welcome them on our property. However, E-bikes, many of which are illegal for any operator under 16 years old, present a clear danger to those coming to our campuses to work, attend school, and visit.
The School Board is in the process of updating district policy related to recreational vehicles on our property and are moving quickly to ban E-bikes as a matter of policy due to the urgency of the concerns. We appreciate your collaboration with us to ensure the safety of everyone in MSAD 52.
