These Hand2Mind Marble Tracers visually show the formation of each letter! I especially love how students can see the difference between b and d! So helpful!

My students have been absolutely amazing this summer! 😎 ☀️

Each child has dedicated time to strengthening their reading, writing, and spelling skills, and watching their growth has been such a joy! 🥰

We’ve been busy! I enjoy using a variety of materials and activities to meet each student’s individual needs and keep sessions interesting. I also had the opportunity to learn a new program, RAVE-O, this summer, which was such a great addition to my teaching toolkit!

My students and I have been building skills, overcoming challenges, and celebrating progress along the way! 📝 📈🎉

I’m so proud of the hard work and perseverance my students have shown and I can't believe we're down to our last week and a half before summer break! How did that happen so fast? 🤷‍♀️

It’s been a while, so I thought I’d re-introduce myself! 🤗

Hi! I’m Valerie, owner and reading specialist at Lilac Literacy! 👋🏼

After several years in the classroom, I founded Lilac Literacy because I knew many students needed more individualized, evidence-based reading support than they were able to receive during the school day. 🎯

The best part of my job is being able to support students in a one-on-one setting, creating a plan just for them, and celebrating them as they build the skills they need to become confident readers! ☺️

I never imagined I would be a small business owner, but it’s been such a fun and rewarding adventure so far! As we’re gearing up for the upcoming school year, I’m excited to share more about Lilac Literacy, make new connections within our community, and continue to help students grow as readers! 📚

I had a blast teaching these two amazing writers during our Science + Writing Lab last the last 2 weeks! 🌋

These incredible students came ready to study all things volcanos and lava! We played lava themed games (The Floor is Lava!), conducted lava experiments, read about volcanos, and of course, wrote about them!

We followed the Releasing Writers POWER writing process from planning all the way to revising to make sure our writing was clear, organized, and had important details and vocabulary! While we worked together for some parts, I loved seeing the students add their own voice and flair to their writing!

It was so much fun trying something new this summer, and we had a great time! I'm so impressed with their final drafts and love that we were able to combine science and writing in a way that made writing meaningful, engaging, and fun! 🤗

It's been busy behind the scenes here lately and there is a big reason why! Lilac Literacy is now looking for a qualified teacher to join the team! 🎉

I founded Lilac Literacy to help students who struggle with reading build the strong foundation they need to become confident readers. As Lilac Literacy grows, my goal remains that all tutors provide individualized, evidence-based instruction in a supportive, encouraging environment.

I’m looking for a tutor who:

✅ Holds a current Oregon teaching license.
✅ Has experience teaching or tutoring elementary and/or middle school students.
✅ Has a strong understanding of the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy practices.

Preferred qualifications

💜 Reading endorsement and/or specialized training in literacy intervention.
💜 Experience administering and interpreting curriculum-based reading assessments.
💜 Experience working with students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.

I’m so excited about this Lab, it’s going to be eye-opening! 👀

In “Superpower of Sight,” students learn the foundational science of how the human eye works while also exploring common causes of vision difficulties. 👁️

They bring learning to life by constructing an Eye Model, using a magnifying lens to represent the cornea and investigating how the parts of the eye work together to support vision. Then, we build a strong informational paragraph together using science vocabulary and clear, precise details.

I’m excited to offer a new type of class summer!

Introducing….

🔬 Experiment & Explain: Science + Writing Labs! ✍️

In these small-group classes (just 4 students max), students will dive into fun, hands-on science experiments while learning how to think and write like real scientists using the POWER writing process!

Each lab combines:
✔️ Engaging experiments
✔️ Guided discussion and informational readings
✔️ Structured writing support

Perfect for incoming 3rd–5th graders (about ages 8-11) who are ready to grow their writing skills in a fun, meaningful way.

This summer’s topics include:
